The state of
printer security
Cartridge World discusses what businesses and
home users can do to make printing safer.
The article said that hackers are targeting printers
to gain access to sensitive data on printers and that “potentially anyone on
the internet” can use any wireless printer if it is not secure as hackers did
in several universities in the US.
Modern MFPs contain hard drives and save digital
copies of print jobs and other data which hackers can use but by securing
networks access can reduce the risk and Cartridge World advised trying the
following tips.
Using the security features set by manufacturers and
updating the firmware is the first thing to do followed by making sure Cloud
security is in place for those who use mobile devices Google Cloud printing
service comes with many security features.
The article suggested implementing logins for places
where many people use the printers to ensure tighter security and for those
printers that store information there should be a weekly practice of removing
all stored data.
Passwords should be regularly changed and any services
that are not required should be closed and all new printers should be checked
to make sure the ports are closed while it is also suggested that businesses
and users make use of Patches that can be downloaded.
Lastly the article noted that printer users should be
educated about the potential risks of wireless printers and reminded not to
open suspicious emails or links.

Brother partners to
channel managed print
The OEM recently gained the right to offer
managed print on G-Cloud 9 and now needs its channel partners to take the
product to the public sector.
Computer Weekly reported that the MPS was designed specifically with the public sector
and channel in mind making it achievable for resellers to “offer contracts”
online or phone.
Brothers MPS and Omnijoin web conferencing system was
accredited through G-Cloud which is a framework that “provides smaller
suppliers with a chance to pitch for public sector business”. This has worked
well so far as £1.6 billion (2 USD/(ˆ1.8 billion) has been laid out on the
governments digital marketplace with 56 percent of total sales and 64 percent
of volume being awarded to SMEs.
Phil White, Managed Print Sales Manager, Brother UK, said: “A
huge breadth of organisations in the public sector want to get access to the
efficiencies and peace of mind that managed print services bring. We’ve seen
some larger public sector organisations save six-figures off their printing
bill through MPS and so we’re hoping our new cloud-based MPS will open up
similar opportunities for smaller organisations.”

Printer shipments
in EMEA stabilise
A report by market analyst Context said
that shipments this year are up on 2016 Q1 when there was an eight percent
fall.
Zivile Brazdziunaite, Imaging Market Analyst at
Context, said: “The Middle East and Africa
(MEA) region outperformed other regions with unit shipments increasing by seven
percent, following the double-digit decline last year. All categories, except
for laser MFPs, registered positive performance over the first quarter of 2017.”
There was a 19 percent overall increase in sales in
the UAE despite a fall in the laser hardware segment due to demand for inkjet
technology devices and Turkey saw an increase of MFP laser and inkjet shipments
while South Africa showed a three percent improvement and “Saudi Arabia
continued to decline”.
70 percent of sales of printer hardware shipments to
EMEA is a result of a “sell into Western Europe (WE)” and although Q1 was flat
there was an improvement on last years six percent fall and there was an
increase of shipments to most WE countries. In UKand France, there was a one
percent increase due to inkjet devices while Italy’s laser devices showed a two
percent YOY growth.
Germanys shipments were down
five percent and this was in all categories with the exception for laser MFPs
which had increased by 12 percent while in Spainand the Netherlandsthere was double figured growth of “printer hardware sell-in”.
Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) was the same as that
of WE while sell into Russia showed a four percent increase mostly due to laser
MFPs. Strong performances were recorded in Kazakhstan and Belarus due to laser
devices but “sell-in levels to Poland and the Czech Republic declined”.

Erasable toner
awarded ISO certifications
Toshiba announced that the British
Standards Institution (BSI) verified its erasable toner MFPs met the ISO 14040
and ISO 14044.
The company’s e-STUDIO3508LP,
e-STUDIO4508LP and e-STUDIO5008LP MFPs with the paper reusing device e-STUDIO RD301 met
the standards of the Life Cycle Assessment required for the ISO certifications.
Toshiba stated that “the e-STUDIO3508LP,
e-STUDIO4508LP, and e-STUDIO5008LP are Toshiba Tec’s unique and eco-conscious
product which prints regular black prints as well as erasable blue prints
within one device.” The printers are environmentally friendly and reduce CO2
emission from paper production using the erasable inks.
The process compared Toshiba Tec’s
regular MFPs with the e-STUDIO ones and found that by using erasable toner they
will reduce CO2 emission by 57 percent compared to that of five black prints.
Toshiba has a “three greens philosophy”
which is Greening products, Greening of process and Green management and the
company said that it strives to “be one of the world’s leading eco-conscious
companies”.
The company stated that “by verifying
its products to ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, Toshiba Tec is taking major steps
towards addressing the environmental aspects and potential impacts throughout a
product’s life.”

The right to repair
US Copyright Office wants Congress to pass legislation so that customers
have the right to repair products bought from companies who prevent consumers
from doing this.
Thehill.com reported that the US Copyright Office wrote in a report: “The Office
recommends against limiting an exemption to specific technologies or devices,
such as motor vehicles, as any statutory language would likely be soon outpaced
by technology.
“The Office believes
these matters are better addressed through laws or regulations outside of the
Copyright Act.” However, there were no “specific recommendations” put forward
for a written law at this time.
Over recent years
companies like printer manufacturers and automobile companies state that is
illegal for customers to “bypass locks” placed on their products and this stops
third parties from repairing or servicing them. In the farming community in Nebraska farmers have
been using illegal Ukrainian software to override their John Deere tractors
systems so that they can repair them on their own.
Due to some exemptions
granted by the Copyright Office on Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium
Copyrights Act, renewable every three years industry by industry, there is now
a makeshift set of exemptions for some technology but not for others.
Public comments
related to repairs relayed to the Office have gone from 750 comments 2000-2012
to 40,000 in2015.
The US Copyright
Office argued in its report that companies have been using section 1201
perversely to the purpose of “provision” and stated that: “Virtually all agree
that section 1201 was not intended to facilitate manufacturers’ use of
[software locks] to facilitate product tying or to achieve a lock?in effect
under which consumers are effectively limited to repair services offered by the
manufacturer.”

Toshiba’s troubles
continue
The OEM has been “demoted” on the Tokyo stock exchange and
is continuing talks to sell Memory Chip business.
Reuters reported that the company has bigger financial losses for 2016 than
first estimated and as a result was downgraded on the Tokyo stock exchange to the second section.
Toshiba has also been given permission from regulatory bodies to delay filing
its yearly accounting by a month due to a “prolonged accounting investigation
at its bankrupt Westinghouse nuclear unit” and this is the sixth time the
company has asked for more time in filing accounts since 2015.
The company will now file its earnings by 10 August
and Toshiba President Satoshi Tsunakawa is set to hold a news conference in Tokyo at 5 pm today.
Meanwhile, Wirth Consulting reported that the
company is set to sell its Memory Chip business to a consortium of investors
which includes “Innovation Corporation of Japan,
Bain Capital Private Equity, and the Development Bank of Japan”.
Toshiba split the Toshiba Memory Corporation from the
main company and it became a “wholly owned subsidiary” but its sale is needed
to cover the billions of dollars the company has lost from its nuclear unit in America.
According to Wirth Consulting Toshiba said that the consortium
“presented the best proposal, not only in terms of valuation, but also in
respect to certainty of closing, retention of employees, and maintenance of
sensitive technology within Japan (the consortium is based in either Japan or
South Korea).” It appears that Foxconn and Apple are now out of the picture
having previously tried to buy the chip business.
The transaction was expected to be completed by March
2018 but in a further setback Western Digital, Toshiba’s manufacturing partner
in the chip business, filed a lawsuit in California to try and block the OEM
from selling the business and requested a San Francisco state court to “keep
the sale on hold” until a legal dispute is resolved with Western Digital.
Steve Milligan, CEO, Western Digital, said Toshiba was
“violating contractual rights” and that had left his company no alternative but
to take legal action. However, there is speculation that the dispute may be
ended and that Western Digital may join the consortium.
Reuters said the consortium bid would have to clear Toshiba’s 2 trillion yen
debt (18 USD/ˆ16 billion).

Canon awarded 4.5m USD in toner bottle case
On 19 June, the US District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Atlanta Division, awarded Canon 4.5 million USD (ˆ4.02 million) after a jury found that Color Imaging and General Plastics did
indeed infringe Canon’s toner bottle design.
The Recycler reported on the start of the case in 2015, which saw Canon accuse GPI and Color
Imaging of patent infringement, with the USITC issuing the details of the complaint, which referred to the importation of toner
bottles used in the OEM’s imageRUNNER, imageRUNNER ADVANCE and imagePRESS
devices. The OEM was looking to stop the companies from importing the bottles
into the United States, the
sale for importation, and the sale within the United States of the aforementioned
products.
Canon had requested that the USITC issue “a permanent
limited exclusion order and cease and desist orders”. A Limited Exclusion Order
(LEO) differs from a General Exclusion Order (GEO), but would still bar the two
companies from importing and selling the bottles infringing the patents, as
well as enforcing cease and desist orders.
In a ‘Notice of institution of investigation’, the
USITC stated that it had received Canon’s original complaint in early June
2015, and “having considered the complaint”, it had ordered “an investigation
to be instituted to determine whether there is a violation” of patents in the
case.
Canon previously undertook toner bottle IP cases in
the UKagainst Parsia International, Allcopy Products and PPC Solutions Ltd. Parsia
settled with the OEM in October 2013, as did AllCopy in September 2013 and PPC
in April 2014.
Color Imaging told The
Recycler at the time when
the case was announced: “GPI and Color Imaging respect the intellectual
property rights of others, including Canon’s. They firmly believe that their
innovative aftermarket products offer a viable alternative that is beneficial
to the consumers, and should not be squeezed out of the market by means other
than fair competition in the market.”
After more than five years, since the case started the
verdict from the jury court was that General Plastics was ordered to pay 3.7
million USD (ˆ3.31 Million), and Color Imaging just under 1 million USD (ˆ0.89
million).
General Plastics released a statement saying “The
Company has made a new revision design for the products in this area to meet
the market demand.” It continues: “The company and the US lawyers
believe that the decision has a major flaw, will proceed to move Appeal.”

Kyocera introduces
new toner technology
KYOCERA Document Solutions
America announced the introduction of the ECOSYS P8060cdn, a high-capacity,
print-only device ideal for midsize companies and workgroups featuring its new
toner technology.
The core print capabilities are full
1200×1200 dpi, up to 60-ppm in black and white and 55-ppm in colour, up to
12”x18” media support, with standard paper capacity of 1,150 sheets, expandable
up to 7,150 sheets, with professional finishing capabilities.
“In terms of print functionality,
the ECOSYS P8060cdn delivers everything our customers expect,” said Douglas
Cole, Director of Product Marketing at KYOCERA Document Solutions America.
“However, that’s only the beginning.”
The ECOSYS P8060cdn comes with Wi-Fi
Direct and NFC capabilities for Android mobile devices. The printer is
HyPAS-enabled, ready to run KYOCERA Mobile PrintTM, Apple AirPrint®, and Google
Cloud PrintTM, as well as Kyocera’s security and cost control business
applications, including AccessLockTM and CentraQ Pro®. All capabilities are
easily accessible through the 9”colour touch-screen interface.
The ECOSYS P8060cdn features an
innovative revolving toner system that simplifies mechanics and reduces energy
requirements. The printer supports tiered-colour billing, as well as Kyocera
Fleet Services (KFS) – a comprehensive cloud-based monitoring service that
allows authorised dealers to handle many maintenance tasks for their customers
without time-consuming on-site visits. Through KFS, dealers can anticipate
issues and resolve them before they occur, and even update firmware remotely
during off-hours, maximising uptime across the entire fleet.
The brilliant 1200×1200 print
resolution is further enhanced by Kyocera’s new toner technology. Colours are
deeper and more vivid, blacks are sharper and more well-defined – especially
thin-ruled lines and smaller characters.
The ECOSYS P8060cdn uses toner
engineered with smaller particles, which require less heat to fuse them to the
page, reducing energy consumption. There is an ingenious, environmentally
friendly toner container replacement system in which empty black toner
containers can be re-used as waste toner containers, which minimises landfill
waste – as does the Toner Locking System that ensures containers are completely
empty before they are replaced.
“Kyocera has always offered some of
the industry’s best high-performance print-only devices,” continued Cole. “With
the ECOSYS P8060cdn, we’ve raised the bar once again.”
The ECOSYS P8060cdn is available
through authorised Kyocera dealers at the manufacturer’s suggested retail price
(MSRP) of 6,188 USD (ˆ5,539).
