INKJET IS
RESHAPING THE PUBLISHING WORLD
A Ricoh annual event,
industry elites of the paper and imaging industry gathered together to discuss
how the Inkjet technologies are reshaping the publishing industry.
According to Ricoh, IT
Strategies even predicted that more than double the amount of books would be
printed by the year 2020, thanks to inkjet technologies.
At the 3rd annual
Publishing Executive Symposium, Ricoh and the attendees of the event have
witnessed the game-changing effects of the current of production inkjet
technology. Publishers around the world have taken its advantage of producing
efficiently with lower cost and higher quality. That is why the volume of
inkjet publishing applications are increasing in the industry.
The attendees of the
event were shown case studies from Edwards Brothers Malloy, Publishers
Graphics, and BR Printers about how they have used the inkjet technology for
publishing.
The former president of
Pearson North America, Don Kilburn, were convinced that inkjet would be the
long form of the publishing industry.
He said, “It’s clear
that inkjet is the long form of the publishing industry. Hearing from the
analysts who validate that, and seeing other publishers continue adopting it is
evidence that it’s here and it’s what will be.”
Jeff Paterra, executive
vice president of commercial and industrial printing at Ricoh has also
commented, “The way publishing and inkjet technology intersect has
fundamentally changed, and today’s publishing visionaries understand that
exploring these changes is crucial
to adapting.”
The 3rd annual
Publishing Executive Symposium was a three-day, invitation-only event organized
by Ricoh in Boulder, Colorado.

OEMS ATTACK
FAKE CARTRIDGES ON YOUTUBE
The
nine best-known printer brands are working together in Europeto warn resellers and consumers about the dangers of counterfeits.
HP,
Canon, Epson, Brother, Samsung, Lexmark, Xerox, Kyocera, Oki and Ricoh have
produced a video and
launched it on YouTube.
The
Imaging Consumables Coalition of Europe, Middle East and Africa,
better known as ICCE was formed in 1997 to spearhead the fight against
intellectual property theft of imaging supplies.
Their
video, which alleges fake products cost the global economy US billion
annually, shows counterfeit products with the voiceover warning fakes can
release dangerous chemicals. They use news headlines from an unidentifiable
news source to link the sales of counterfeit print cartridges with alleged
terrorist groups. The video also includes interviews from government agencies
and the professional association.
“As
a legitimate reseller, it’s really important that you remain vigilant and make
sure that you don’t sell counterfeit imaging supplies. Selling fake goods is a
serious criminal offense and can result in prosecution,” says Michael Ellis,
Head of Interpol Trafficking in Illicit Goods.
The
video also advises the viewer that the OEMs have been working on upgrading
their authentication methods to catch those making, selling and dealing with
fake cartridges. Consumers and resellers are urged to report fake cartridges
and bring those responsible to the authorities for prosecution. Counterfeiting
is a jailable offense in most countries.

XEROX
OPTIMISTIC ABOUT ITS FUTURE
The
company that invented photocopying and laser printing claims to have just
conducted the biggest product launch in its 110-year history.
According
to industryanalysts.com, Xerox’s CEO Jeff Jacobson launched
29 new products enabled by Xerox’s ConnectKey technology. Under the VersaLink
brand, Xerox will have nineteen MFPs including twelve A4 devices. The AltaLink
brand will sport ten new A3 MFPs. He said Xerox has transformed its traditional
MFP into “a smart, workplace assistant” by leveraging assistance from its
high-tech center based in California known as Palo Alto Research Center,
or PARC.
“PARC is
now once again 100% dedicated to serving the needs of the new Xerox customers
and this industry.” By saying “once again,” Jacobson suggested that PARC had
previously developed all kinds of technology that have had nothing to do with
what Xerox does.
Jacobsen
also said that 60% of Xerox’s revenue comes from the mature markets now worth
US billion out of the US billion global market. The profits account for
60% of Xerox’s overall revenues. Xerox will focus more on the residual US
billion market in developing regions and hopes to earn 50% of it future
revenues from this market. In order to achieve this, Xerox will focus on four
areas: production color, managed document devices, A4 laser printer entry space
and target these services to small and medium businesses (SMBs) through its
channel partners.
Xerox has
created a platform to customization the products for its channel partners to
help them find new revenue streams. With the invention of smart devices and
Xerox’s ConnectKey technology, the company’s customers can develop their own
apps easily. The new technology will facilitate the development of the MPS
businesses of Xerox’s channel partners as well.

TWO SEIZURE AND FORFEITURE ORDERS ISSUED IN 2017
The USITC has issued two seizure and
forfeiture orders against two separate companies, one being Clover
Technologies.
The two seizure and forfeiture
orders are said to be the first ones to be issued in 2017.
According to copies of legal
documents provided to RT
Media, Illinois-based Clover Technologies and its subsidiary Cartridges
Are Us were found to have violated the GEO related to No. 337-TA-723 investigation,
while attempting to ship inkjet ink cartridges with printheads and components
into the USA.
The U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection (US Customs) denied entry of
the imports and reported the matter to the US International Trade Commission
(USITC). Based on information provided by Customs, as is the usual practice,
the USITC issued a seizure and forfeiture order towards the company.
On the same day, the USITC issued
the other seizure and forfeiture order towards a Californian-based company
called the CBD Group Inc.
As the legal documents reveal, products
imported into the USA by CBD Group Inc., included toner cartridges and
components that were denied entry by the US Customs. The company has allegedly
violated the GEO related to the 337-TA-918 investigation,
resulting in a seizure and forfeiture order.
To date, the number of seizure and forfeiture orders issued against the
industry totals 155, with 72 in 2016 alone, and 2 in 2017.

BILLION DOLLAR MPS OPPORTUNITY
A
recent loyalty study shows that new opportunities exist in the US billion
dollar MPS market in North American companies with more than 1,000 employees.
Research
group Photizo has just released their 2016 MPS Advisory Service Forecast
focusing on the imaging industry.
Currently,
US billion of this market is tied up in MPS contracts. However, Photizo
claims that 33% of MPS contract holders are considering either to switch MPS
vendors or take over their outsourced MPS contracts internally.
“Many
vendors are making a serious error in assuming that their existing customer
loyalty or satisfaction study is adequately identifying threats to their
customer base,” said Ed Crowley, CEO of Photizo Group. “Without an
understanding of how your customer satisfaction and loyalty compares to your
competitors, it’s easy to overestimate the strength of your customer
relationships.”
According
to MPSConnect.com, the
multiphase study started with a quantitative study of Enterprise MPS customers
in the USA, Canada, Germany,France, and the UK.

HP Case Plaintiffs Seek MDL Centralization of Class Actions
RT Media had reported that HP’s
firmware update on its printers caused end-users unable to use their HP
printers in September.
Later, two U.S.-based law firms, Garrison Davis LLC and Girard
Gibbs, had filed class actions against HP for the company’s firmware
update.
According to harrismartin.com, now the
plaintiffs in one of the four nationwide pending class actions against HP’s
firmware update issue of Americaare seeking to consolidate the cases in California.
As in the other three cases, the plaintiffs accused HP Inc. of using software
updates to disable HP printers that used third-party ink cartridges.
The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation stated that all of the four
cases against HP are “similar to warrant transfer and coordination before Judge
Lucy H. Koh of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of
California.”
Some customers who used non-HP cartridges in their HP OfficeJet, OfficeJet
Pro, and OfficeJet Pro X series of printers found out that they couldn’t use
the printers any longer in September. HP announced that for the sake of
security, the company had updated the firmware on its OfficeJet series of
printers. Those printers used the cartridges containing the HP’s Security chips
wouldn’t be affected during that firmware update.
Later, the OEM apologized and issued
an optional firmware update for affected customers to help recover their
printers for the previous firmware updates.

US Market Warned about 'Clones'
In two separate notices, both OEM Xerox and Aftermarket Clover have
issued warnings to the USdealers and markets that clones are “destroying an entire industry.”
Xerox has sent out a two-page flyer
stating, “Clone cartridges are 100% new-built cartridges produced by
third-party manufacturers to look like the real thing. Often sold as
‘remanufactured’ and with a strong environmental message, clone cartridges are
neither the real thing nor environmentally responsible.”
Xerox, who is by far the largest
supplier of printer supplies to the managed print channel, including printers
that are not their own brand, also warned “clone cartridges appear to be less
costly, but they aren’t. Image quality is low, failure rates are high, damage
to the printer is common and these are not even the most serious issues.” Xerox
uses Aftermarket supplies to fill its managed print channel orders for other
OEM devices. They purchase these from companies like the Clover Imaging Group,
the largest remanufacturer of cartridges in the world.
You can read the Xerox two-page
flyer on the tonerNews.com website at http://tonernews.com/forums/topic/websitecontent-47506/.
Some OEMs, however, are
now starting to visit Chinese cartridge manufacturers to relook at the
new-built cartridge industry. So are many of the “big box” distributors like
Staples and DepotMax.
Former Recharger Magazine editor
Patricia Ames scored a rare interview with Clover’s founding CEO Jim Cerkleski.
Her article, like the Xerox article, was also published this week.
In her article, Ames asked Cerkleski what he saw to be the
greatest challenge in the next couple of years in the imaging industry. Cerkleski
responded, “It’s the clones coming into the marketplace.” He blames US Customs
and the OEMs for not shutting it down. “They really have not been able to make
any discernible impact,” he adds.
Cerkleski is quick to add that he
works closely with the OEMs. “I am in constant communication with the OEMs
about this issue and that’s one of the reasons why I want to partner with the
OEMs. I want the OEMs to know that the legitimate remanufacturers are not the
bad guys, it’s the blatant and disrespectful clone manufacturers that have no
respect for IP at all.”
Clover has become the industry’s
most successful and iconic Aftermarket brand. As pointed out in Ames’ article, Clover is
spending “millions and millions of dollars a year” collecting empties that
would have gone to landfill. Reuse is an important, environmental platform that
can only be argued by the cartridge remanufacturers. The new-built
manufacturers have no strategy to collect and reuse their used cartridges.
You can read Ames’ full interview with Cerkleski at http://www.theimagingchannel.com/11-blogs/973-speakeasy-q-a-with-jim-cerkleski-clover-and-mike-stramaglio-mwai.
"Clones" is a word used to
describe new-built cartridges, manufactured by third-party companies in China. Five
years ago, all new-built cartridges were literally “clones”—exact replicas of
the OEM products. They ignored all intellectual property rights of the OEMs.
They were not counterfeit as they usually were packaged as being compatible.
However, many did end up in the hands of distributors who packaged them in OEM
looking boxes and sold them as the genuine article. Remanufactured cartridges
are also distributed as fake OEM products. These are crimes punishable by jail
sentences.
Today, many new-built manufacturers
in Chinahave developed their own patents, and the new-built cartridges are not
necessarily “clones” any more. It is estimated that there are about 5,000
Aftermarket patents now held by Chinese companies that have sought their own
workaround solutions for printer cartridges. Some manufacturers have met with
border authorities in the USto demonstrate why the products do not infringe and have been allowed to enter.
A number of industry analysts have
told RT Media Cerkleski’s Clover holds very powerful business relationships
with the OEMs in order to supply Aftermarket products they need to fulfil their
MPS contracts. Clover does not make any new-built cartridges. “Non-infringing,
new-built products coming from Chinacould undermine the strong business relationship between Clover and the OEMs in
the future,” one person noted. “If the cheaper, new-built cartridges prove to
provide consistent yield and quality, and are in fact non-infringing, then they
could, potentially, change the aftermarket landscape,” another person
suggested.

Millions of Pounds of
Used Cartridges Saved from Landfill
HP claims its recycling program, in
co-operation with Staples, has collected over 128 million pounds (58 million
kgs) of hardware and HP supplies.
According to 3DL Media, the OEM started to work with the office supply giant ten years ago.
The idea was to set up a chain of return and recycling "drop-off"
locations to recycle used HP ink and toner cartridges.
To date, empty cartridges weighing the
same as 130 Boeing 747-8 planes or 29 space shuttles (including fuel) have been
collected. HP claims that 80% of its original ink cartridges and 100% of its
toner cartridges contain recycled materials, partly coming from Staples'
customers. The OEM also maintains all returned items were recycled instead of
being sent to landfills.
"Our collaboration with Staples is a
great example of how we can partner for greater benefit to our customers and
the environment," said Joe Pacula, Head of the Americas, HP Supplies business.
"We are fully committed to helping customers recycle, plus buy products
with recycled content."
The HP Planet Partners program was
established by the OEM 25 years ago, and has turned recycled plastic into more
than 3 billion new HP print cartridges.

Tips on Shipping
Cartridges Into the U.S.A.
Importing cartridges covered by an ITC
order into the USface many potential hurdles.
Merritt Blakeslee (pictured), US attorney from the Blakeslee Law firm in Washington DC.
shared his legal expertise about GEOs as they relate to printing consumables,
with almost 200 delegates at the RT imaging Summit in Zhuhai.
Blakeslee pointed out that there is a
different legal analysis for each different Aftermarket cartridge. In his
opinion, Reman cartridges can use patent exhaustion to defend, while the
design-around can prove it’s technically non-infringing.
To use patent exhaustion as a defense for
Remans, importers must prove the OEM cartridge was used first sold in the United States.
It might not be easy for companies outside the U.S. as lots of documentation is
needed, according to Blakeslee.
In addition, importers have to prove the
remanufacturing process constitutes repair (permissible repair), and not
reconstruction of the OEM cartridge.
Blakeslee pointed out that almost any refurbishment constitutes “permissible
reconstruction”.
Blakeslee also introduced the two parts of
the US Customs and Board Protection Bureau (CBP) that administer ITC remedial
orders. He recommended importers to contact CBP informally once goods are
detained. “A CBP decision to exclude or to seize merchandise is a legal
decision, and your effort to reverse that decision must be supported by a
superior legal analysis,” he added.
However, remanufacturers can take actions
to pre-clear their cartridges even before goods are detained. Blakeslee
preferred the approach where the Branch Chief of CEE-Electronics is contacted
informally, to obtain a formal letter ruling
from the IPR Branch.

OEM Sued by Its Shareholder
Large shareholder seeks to hold back the
split of Xerox for claimed benefits loss.
According to Reuters, Xerox is being sued by its largest individual investor as well as the
forth-largest overall—Darwin Deason. Darwin Deason acquired his preferred
convertible stock in Xerox as part of the ACS deal and currently owns 6.1% of
Xerox stock. Deason complained his shares will be held in the legacy copier and
printer business instead of Conduent Inc., the faster growing document
outsourcing business.
The Conduent business comprises of the
operation of Affiliated Computer Services Inc (ACS) based in Dallas, the company founded by Deason, and
was acquired by Xerox for US.4 billion in 2010.
Deason requested the court to keep the
Conduent business from separation. The court was also asked to declare that it
violated Xerox's certificate of incorporation for stripping Deason's right of
receiving a convertible stock in Conduent.
Xerox replied in a Thursday statement
saying Deason's lawsuit was meritless and the company would seek its dismissal.
The OEM also added that it expects to complete the split on schedule and that
the deal will enhance shareholder value.

Raid in Turkey Reveals
Counterfeiters Using the STMC logo
The Imaging Supplies
Coalition (ISC) is comprised of OEMs that have come together for the sole
purpose of fighting fraud and counterfeiting in imaging supplies. The ISC
reported that their work has resulted in hundreds of thousands of products
worth millions of dollars have been removed from commerce.
In September, the ISC recently held their annual
meeting, where OEM and aftermarket representatives meet to understand and
tackle the problem. Customs officials, industry analysts and others
presented information on their industry issues, while there were intermittent
presentations showing raids held on counterfeiters in various countries.
One depicted a raid in Turkey where
the counterfeiters were using the STMC logo on their illegitimate products and
boxes. There are no STMC cartridges. STMC (Standardized Test Methods Committee)
is a committee that implements standardized test methods for cartridges, and
certifies the companies that use them. So aftermarket cartridges are also
vulnerable.
In the past decade, the ISC often found
remanufactured cartridges branded as counterfeit. Now they are Chinese
compatibles. This saves the criminals money, as it obviates the need for
remanufacturing supplies. Asian laws can’t keep up with the problem, and the
penalties only make counterfeiting more attractive.

U.S. Solicitor General
Supports the aftermarket Position in Supreme Court Case
On October 12, the U.S.
Solicitor General submitted its friend-of-the-court brief in the case of
Lexmark International v. Impression Products, and it urges the Court to
consider both issues in the case.
First, there should be no “conditional sales”
exception to patent exhaustion arising from a post-sale use restriction.
Secondly, a foreign first sale presumptively exhausts US patent rights, unless the US patent owner
expressly reserves those rights in the terms of the foreign sale.
The Court already has several IP cases on the
docket this term, but the Solicitor General’s brief significantly increases the
likelihood that the Court will grant certiorari and hear the case. The Supreme
Court has routinely been overturning patent holders’ positions supported by the
federal circuit. The Office of Solicitor General supervises and conducts
government litigation in the US Supreme Court, and its opinion carries
significant weight.

Ink Grows and Drives
Growth
When various reports are showing the fact
that the turnover of the industry is decreasing, GfK sees the potential.
According to Aldo de Smedt from GfK, the
turnover of the global market showed a slight decline, down 5.9% in the first
half of the year. The value of the print consumables captured 65% of the global
market during this period, while the value of printing devices marked 35%.
Likewise, both original and non-original consumables in the global market were
slightly declining over the same period. The value of the original supplies
still captured 89.8% of the global market, while non-original consumables only
registered 10.2%.
Also, de Smedt pointed out that even
though the average prices for laser and ink cartridges are declining, business
ink, CISS and internet sales are growing in all regions. And the multifunctional
devices drive the market, specifically leading a higher color consumables
potential.
Despite the decline, de Smedt found that
the printing industry is moving towards higher volume, lower costs, faster
speed and better quality. He believes there are some potential areas for
growth, such as business ink, laser MFD basic, Internet business, high yielded
cartridges, etc.
Just as Aldo de Smedt says, "We are
in a tough environment, but we have hope."

Where Do Our
Opportunities Lie in Mobile Printing?
As mobile printing has become more and
more popular, can the Chinese aftermarket of printing consumables benefit from
this forthcoming trend?
At the 2016 RT Imaging Summit, Thilo
Lutzeler, the CEO of Drivve revealed that mobile printing is an innovative
technology that has combined two kinds of technologies: mobile and printing.
Many giant technology companies, such as
Apple and Google have joined the industry as well.
According to the InfoTrends, around 2/3 of
the younger generation of people (age between 18 and 34) in the U.S. still prefer to read and edit on paper,
while such rate is lower in China.
Otherwise, the research also shows 74% of people in China like to use their mobile
devices for personal printing.
About 40% of people in China know
about the function of mobile printing yet don’t use it. Such rate is lower than
that of in the U.S. Lutzeler said that millions of people might have
opportunities to print from their mobile devices but have missed them. It is a
broad area where the manufacturers of printing consumables can excavate.

in the U.S.have spent most of their time processing paperwork.
The survey also shows that only 1 in 5
respondents has heard about the existence of paper-free solutions in the
market. French SMBs possess the furthest plan from digitalizing their paper
processes in comparison with other countries. While 12% of all SMBs will not
implement the digitalization plan in one to three years.
John Corley, president of the Channel
Partner Operations in Xerox, said, “As SMBs embark on their digitalization journey, it’s important
to understand how technology can support their vision and strategy to achieve
successful digital transformation.”

Why
Our Global Industry Cannot Ignore China
Back in 2006, the Goldman Sachs—the
well-known global investment banking firm—predicted China’s economy would
exceed that of western countries by 2050. However, according to Cartridge World
CEO, Chinacould become the number one world economy in 2016, making it the first
“developing economy” in the history of the planet to do so.
At the RemaxWorld Summit 2016, Weedon
noted Chinahas developed a transportation system throughout the country, including the
highly-developed high speed train network. With cluster manufacturing at the
base of China’s
manufacturing industry, 65% of components are now produced in China using its
own raw materials, reducing the need for imports.
Weedon pointed out that in Zhuhai alone,
there are over 680 companies directly related to printing consumables, and
their export volume has exceeded .65 billion. It supplies 68.4% of the inkjet
market, 40.1% of the toner market and 78.6% of the printer ribbon market.
He added China also has changed from
ignoring filing patents for printing consumables to reaching the No.1 country
in the world for the filing of Chinese patents. He urged the audience to remove
its blinkers and include Chinain the business equation—lest they be left behind.

Legal
& Technological Impediments—How to Win
Fresh from the Imaging Supplies Coalition
(ISC) conference in San Diego,
California, Tricia Judge
(pictured), reported counterfeiting costs the imaging industry US billion in
lost legitimate sales—every year.
The ISC was awarded the
Anti-Counterfeiting Award at the Annual RT Imaging Global Awards in Zhuhai on
October 12. It is a coalition of OEMs that are fighting the illegal trade that
has captured between 3.5 to 4% of the market. The Aftermarket has been welcomed
to join the fight along with the OEMs.
Judge, from the International Imaging
Technology Council (Int’l ITC), shared her opinions on counterfeit issues, as
well as the legal issues between OEMs and the Aftermarket at the RemaxWorld
Summit 2016. She pointed out counterfeit cartridges look just like OEM
cartridges, and are represented as new OEM cartridges. Also, According to
Judge, the Imaging Supplies Coalition (ISC) and Int’l ITC are conducting joint
investigations into the counterfeits.
Regarding the latest legal issues, Judge
believes that the First Sale Doctrine is still creating barriers against the
use of cartridges after they have been sold. Judge is licensed to practice
before the U.S. Supreme Court. Therefore, the Int’l ITC Supported Static
Control and Impression Products in their cases against Lexmark’s prebate. The
Council filed U.S. Supreme Court amicus briefs in Quanta, Kirtsaeng, Bowman and
Independent Ink cases. The Int’l ITC is now also supporting Impression
Products’ appeal to the US Supreme Court on first sale doctrine.
Judge declared the Int’l ITC helps to
build the imaging industry. The Council aims to defend the industry from
counterfeit, OEM and other competitive attacks, to educate consumers they have
a choice and as to the benefits of Aftermarket products. “Education is
important also for our members to ensure they deliver best practices, such as
the STMC standard, and to enhance our member’ businesses.”

Chip
Design Company Faces More Challenges than ever
The recent rash of printer
firmware upgrades has focused the Aftermarket’s attention on the development of
smartchip technologies.
With the continuous
development of OEM chip technology, chip design companies are facing more
challenges than ever.
Ding Li (pictured), CTO from
Apex Microelectronics Co., Ltd said at the RemaxWorld Summit 2016, “If the OEM
needs only one step to develop a new chip, remanufacturers has to make five
times the efforts.”
“We do not have the datasheet
of OEM chips, so it is difficult for us to make the chips work exactly as OEM
ones. Moreover, we have to deal with the patent problems which also occupy a
part of the chip's source,” He added.
Mr. Ding pointed that firmware
upgrade is the key problem that limits the printing consumables. In response,
Apex has developed exclusive solutions besides strengthening the defense in chips,
which include:
- Self-developed APP
to automatically monitor firmware upgrades, as well as special team
monitoring and responding to this issue;
- Unismart resettable system
- New solution to
solve serial number problem, namely ActivKit
Mr. Ding predicted the
industry might face more challenges in the future. He revealed a total number
of 714 firmware updates from July 2015 to July 2016, with at least 10 updates
blocked replacement chips. He emphasized that patent is a core competence for
remanufacturer to stand out the ever-intensifying competition. He revealed that
Apex has applied 316 chip patents for now.

Chinese
Toner Industry Dominates Global Demand
Chinais now producing 9% of the world’s toner needs, 50% on what it was delivering
12 years ago. At the same time, the country is producing 28% of the Aftermarket
demand for toner.
So says imaging industry expert Graham
Galliford who has spent his career focusing on the toner industry. According toGalliford, China’s growth came as a result of
joint-ventures with western OEM and independent toner manufacturers.
Galliford spoke to 158 delegates attending
from 23 countries at the RemaxWorld Summit 2016 saying the Chinese industry
continues to take market share from OEM and third-parties in regions outside ofChina.
Galliford pointed out the Chinese toner
manufacturing industry is only operating at 60% capacity and as a result is
producing more toner than what is needed, and dumping it in various regions at
ridiculous prices. He warned this is not sustainable and the industry can
expect to see closures and amalgamations in the future. As a result of low
profits, the industry is facing investment declines in manufacturing plant
enhancement as well as research and development.
He also noted problems still exist in the
reliability of the supply due to the limited R&D. Because the Chinese market
follows the OEM lead, it is particularly vulnerable, unless it develops an OEM
toner industry of its own.

Foreign
Electronic Devices Purchasing Limited in Russia
Russian state-owned firms are limited in
buying foreign made electronic devices according to the new regulation.
As reported by RT.com, a regulation released in Russia sets a limit to the
state-owned companies from buying foreign electronics, including scanners and
printers. Meanwhile, the purchase will not be denied unless there are two
Russian or Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) producers in bid.
However, a foreign device can be regarded
as a Russian product if it is produced as part of a contract between the
producer and Russia.
They are inevitably regarded as Russian devices when produced in Russia. The rules also apply to software.
The Russian Federal Anti-Monopoly Service
criticized that the regulation will cause higher prices without improving
product quality. According to the competition regulator, import substitution
should be reduced to defense, pharmaceuticals and food.

3D
Filament Made from Used Cartridges
A France-based ink cartridge manufacturer has
transformed plastic cartridge waste into 3D filament.
As reported by 3ders.org, the manufacturer Armor has launched a first 3D filament line Owa to
reduce plastic cartridge waste around the world. The company found out that 70%
of purchased 360 million printer cartridges in Western
Europe either end up in landfills or being burnt. Through Owa,
Armor has turned old cartridges into new ones or changed them into new office
supplies.
It's said that the filament is more flexible and
durable than other standard 3D printing materials such as PLA or ABS. In
addition, it can also be made from recycled yogurt containers, etc.
Armor has agreed to collect recyclable used
cartridges from businesses in order to encourage them to recycle the waste in
their offices. Now the 3D printing filaments are manufactured at Armor’s
factory in Moroccoas well as in La Chevrolière.

HP Strikes Back to Consumer Advocacy Group
HP
has officially responded to the announcement of investigating whether HP’s
firmware update has breached Australian Consumer Law by Choice, an Australian
consumer advocacy group.
As
reported by Sydney Morning Herald, Choice is assessing whether HP
has misled or deceived their customers under section 18 of the Australian
Consumer Law.
According
to iTWire,
Choice has reported many HP printers using third-party ink cartridges displayed
error messages after a firmware update was issued by the company. Choice doubts
that HP is restricting customers to exclusively buy the company's expensive
ink.
The
OEM asserts in a statement, “HP does not prevent customers from printing with
refilled or remanufactured ink cartridges using an Original HP security chip.
The updated firmware relies on HP's dynamic security technology; because of the
nature of security, we are not prepared to provide information on how it
works.”
“HP
updates are intended to improve user experience, fix bugs and strengthen
security. In fact, we have security features designed to protect HP’s
intellectual property contained in Original HP chips. Notifications and updates
that populate are never intended to impact remanufactured cartridges that were
originally genuine and/or that use Original HP chips.”

OEM to Shake up China Market
International Data
Corporation (IDC) predicts HP will
shake up its market in China's
A3 copier sector with the acquisition of Samsung.
According
to Donna Wang, the Research Manager at IDC China, HP's buying will bag 6,500
printing patents from Samsung. The OEM also plans to release 16 new A3 copier
base MFPs. IDC expects HP will bring major changes to China's market currently
dominated by Japanese brands—Fuji Xerox, Canon and Ricoh.
Wang
stated, "The acquisition will allow HP to build on its own strength in
printing solutions and leverage Samsung's leading position in the smart office
sector to expand its printing management service business. To a certain extent,
HP's focus on these two areas will trigger major changes in China's
printing market."
IDC's
report shows A3 copier base MFPs account for 6% of China's entire shipment in
hardcopy peripheral market, but the sales revenue occupied 34% of the market.
IDC says the A3 MFPs have substantially higher average prices and bigger
printing volumes than desktop printers. That is to say it has larger potential
profits from follow-up consumables and services, IDC added.

“People aren’t emotionally invested in
things like ink and toner, but it certainly becomes emotional when you feel
like it’s cheaper to buy a new printer rather than a new set of cartridges”,
said Aaron Leon (pictured), CEO of LD Products. “We know having choices is an
important factor in customer satisfaction and we truly

ETIRA
Responds to HP Firmware Update
We reported frustrations
and reactions from the aftermarket following HP’s recent firmware update, now
the European remanufacturers’ association ETIRA takes action in response.
According to the Recycler, ETIRA is now assessing the impact of the
HP firmware update.
Secretary General Vincent van Dijk
(pictured) was cited to comment on the issue, saying: “This is the second time
this year that overnight firmware updates lock out cartridges which functioned
perfectly well up to the day before, but stopped working after the update. With
the help of our members we are now closely investigating the matter, to see how
big the real damage for remanufactured cartridges is.”
He further added, “But even if not all
non-HP Inc. cartridges were equally affected, the overall image of our industry
is definitively affected by these problems. As a principle, ETIRA sees
unrequested firmware updates locking out non-original products as yet another
example of anti-remanufacturing practices of printer manufacturers, just like
unfair patents, clever chips, poor design for reuse, closed-shop collection
programs, and etc.”

HP Inc. Aims to Disrupt and
Reinvent Copier Industry With Acquisition of Samsung's Printer Business
HP wants to bring
innovation to an antiquated and slow-moving segment. But is this easier said
than done?
Daniel Sparks
Personal computer and printer company HP (NYSE:HPQ) announced a surprising
move on Monday to acquire Samsung Electronics' (NASDAQOTH:SSNLF) printer business in a
deal valued at /lib/forExpo/virtex.php?lang=eng&eventId=6.05 billion. HP stock is trading 1.9% higher at the time of
this writing as investors digest the implications of the deal.
SAMSUNG PRINTER. IMAGE SOURCE: SAMSUNG.
HP's ambitions with the acquisition of Samsung's
printer business are grand. With Samsung's printer technologies under its belt,
the company wants to "disrupt
and reinvent the billion copier industry, a segment that hasn't innovated
in decades," HP said in a press release on Monday.
But such disruption
is easier said than done. While the acquisition may better position HP to
accelerate its plans to make inroads on the copier segment, the move also comes
with meaningful risk.
Here's what investors need to know.
Why Samsung's printer business?
HP's choice to acquire Samsung's printer
segment was based on the belief that the company's A3 MFPs, or multifunction
printers, are superior technology to copiers and can replace them.
HP explained the rationale in its press
release:
Copiers are outdated, complicated machines with dozens
of replaceable parts requiring inefficient service and maintenance agreements.
Customers are frequently frustrated
with the number of visits needed to keep copier machines functioning. Today, HP
is investing to disrupt this
category by replacing copiers with superior multifunction printer (MFP)
technology.
Samsung has built a formidable portfolio of A3 MFPs
that deliver the performance of copiers with the power, simplicity, reliability
and ease-of-use of printers and with as few as seven replaceable parts.
Integrating the Samsung printer business' products, including their
mobile-first and cloud-first user experience, with HP's next-generation
PageWide technologies will create a breakthrough portfolio of printing
solutions with the industry's best device, document, and data security.
As part of the deal, Samsung agreed to
invest 0 million to 0 million in HP through open-market purchases after
closing, demonstrating its confidence in the direction HP is taking its
business.
Furthermore, the deal, which is expected
to close in about 12 months, entails HP's acquisition of Samsung's portfolio of
more than 6,500 printing patents.
Risks
In theory, this acquisition sounds
great. As HP explained in its press release, it creates "new avenues for
growth" for the company as industry sales models "shift from transactional
to contractual." But it's impossible to ignore the heated competition in
the copier space and headwinds in the printer space in general.
By moving into the A3 copier segment
with the Samsung deal, HP will be up against established rivals, such
as Xerox (NYSE:XRX), Canon, and Ricoh. These
players are unlikely to let HP come in and "disrupt"
the industry as easily as HP makes it sound.
Furthermore, the printer segment is
questionable overall as demand declines for printers and supplies. For
instance, in HP's most recent quarter, printing revenue declined 14% year over
year and 5% sequentially. And its higher-margin supplies subsegment, which
accounts for 64% of its printing revenue, saw revenue decline 18% year over
year and 8% sequentially. And Xerox's declining revenue in its document
technology business, which is made up of sales of printer and copier products
and supplies, and the associated maintenance and financing of these products,
doesn't help justify a case for growth opportunities in the A3 copier segment.
Xerox's document technology business reported revenue of /lib/forExpo/virtex.php?lang=eng&eventId=6.8 billion in the
company's most recent quarter, down 7% year over year.
Before the deal's expected closing, in
12 months, HP investors should carefully consider whether a move into the
highly competitive A3 copier space really makes sense.

HP’s
Acquisition of Samsung is Good for Canon Too
The rumors
late last week caught many by surprise, but within days, HP now says it will
acquire Samsung’s printer business for USD 1.05 billion.
Despite Reuters reporting the South Korean
electronics giant had a meager 4% of the global printer market, it is still
ranked in the top 5 along with HP, Canon, Epson and Brother. The top 5, between
them have over 90% of the global market. Now the top 4 will own this market
HP Inc’s President and CEO, Don Weisler
has been eyeing Samsung with the intention of shaking up the USD 55 billion copier
industry. Weisler wants to replace copiers with superior multifunction printer
(MFP) technology. Samsung has developed a range of A3 MFPs that can deliver all
the functionality of copiers with the simplicity and ease-of-use of offered by
MFPs. Samsung will enable him to do that.
“When we became a separate company just 10
months ago, it enabled us to become nimble and focus on accelerating growth and
reinventing industries,” Weisler said. “We are doing this with 3D printing and
the disruption of the USD 12 trillion
traditional manufacturing industry, and now we are going after the USD 55 billion
copier space. The acquisition of Samsung’s printer business allows us to
deliver print innovation and create entirely new business opportunities with
far better efficiency, security, and economics for customers.”
The deal is expected to close within the
next 12 months. According to Enrique Lores, president, Imaging & Printing,
“Until the close of the deal we will leverage a commercial agreement to start

acquisition as well. “This is the largest print acquisition in HP’s history and
accelerates its growth opportunities in the copier segment, strengthens its
leading laser printing portfolio that has been established with Canon.” The
chairman and CEO of Canon Inc, Fujio Mitarai, is quoted as saying, “HP and
Canon have long discussed print innovation to create customer value in business
printing and in the growing MPS market. This transaction will further evolve
our collaboration and bring about growth for both of our companies.”
Samsung Electronics Company’s vice
chairman and CEO, Dr. Oh-Hyun Kwon, responded, “HP Inc. has been a valued
partner and customer of Samsung. We can now leverage our combined capacity for
innovation to further enhance the value of our relationship."
In another announcement, HP introduced an
expansive line of powerful A3 MFPs utilizing Samsung technologies in both laser
and inkjet. Jon Flaxman, COO of HP Inc said it included 16 new next-generation
HP PageWide and LaserJet A3 multifunction printers. He wrote to channel
partners saying, “With today's product launches and the agreement to buy
Samsung's printer business, we are building the industry's most complete and
most secure A3 and A4 product portfolio, giving partners a full range of speed,
price, finishing, and performance options. But we're not just giving you more
printers to sell; we're creating the best all-around, end-to-end value
proposition, including the industry's best customer service experience.”

Remanufacturers
Claim HP is Up to Foul Play
Recycling Times Media has received emails today claiming HP’s recent printer firmware
update has locked them out. They claim consumers are not able to exercise
choice in using Aftermarket ink cartridges in their printers.
“This is an act of piracy,” writes one
remanufacturer. “HP has launched or activated a new firmware designed to stop
the use of aftermarket cartridges.”
Affected printers allegedly display a
message when Aftermarket cartridges are being used, including: “one or more
cartridges are missing or damaged” or “ink system failure.” Apparently this
firmware upgrade was built into the printers as a clocked AUTO upgrade and
cannot be stopped or overridden by turning off the Auto upgrade.
“HP is damaging customers’ property and it
should be brought to account for their actions!” is the cry from another
remanufacturer.
In another email, the writer asks, “I
would especially like to hear HP’s comments regarding the ‘destruction’ of people’s property (that was already
functioning perfectly before) and what recompense it is considering.”
Recycling Times Media has been advised the firmware upgrade affects HP 934, 935, 950,
951, 970 and 971 ink cartridges.

Production Printer Market Continues Growing in 2Q
The global production
printer market has seen a continuous growth in the second quarter of 2016, so
says IDC.
Shipments of the
production printers have increased 10%, while the unit shipment value has upped
3.4% totaling US/lib/forExpo/virtex.php?lang=eng&eventId=6.1 billion.
In addition, high-speed
inkjet production devices have increased 66% year-over-year in system
shipments, in which Canon’s Océ VarioPrint i300 and Ricoh’s Pro VC60000 have
high sales records.
The report shows the
color laser segment in 2Q has witnessed growth as well. The inkjet takes part
of the "big iron" laser share while laser vendors were extending the
variety of downstream products.
Konica Minolta tops the
list for vendors of printers with a 30.4% year-over-year growth in shipments.
Amy Machado, a research
manager of IDC, said, “Successful IT suppliers can offer both inkjet and laser
technologies at a variety of prices to the end-user while expanding into new
markets.”

Second Quarter Data Bounced for Large Format Print Shipment
The second quarter
report for global large format printer shipment shows a strong performance.
According to the report released by IDC, the large format printer (LFP) shipments and hardware
revenue both saw a year-on-year growth in 2Q2016 of 3.90% and 7% respectively.
The shipments of the large format CAD/Technical printer market segment climbed
over 7.5% in the second quarter of 2016, and over 4.5% in the first half of the
same year. Despite the low sales in Asia/Pacific (Japanexcluded), the shipment growth in North America, Europe, Middle
East as well as Africa (EMEA) has balanced the loss.
The total shipment for
the large format graphics declined 2% in the second three-months in 2016
compared to the same period last year. However, its revenue actually went up
0.8% with the market shifting towards more productive printing systems.
Tim Greene, the research
director at IDC for U.S. Large Format Printer Tracker, stated, "On a
worldwide basis the second quarter is often the slowest quarter of the year for
large format printer shipments. If that holds true
then 2016 should be a very good year for the large format printer market.
Recovery in technology categories like eco-solvent and toner-based printers
have run counter to some of the
market trends over the past few quarters to create a bit of a surprisingly
strong Q2."
In addition, HP, Canon,
Epson, Roland DG and Mimaki, sequentially, continued to be the top 5 global
suppliers in the first half of this year.

How Can Mobile Printing Connect Digitalization with Hardcopy?
What’s the No. 1 device you
can’t live without nowadays? How much time do you spend on this device? Does it
stay on the table next to you as you sleep at night?
According to Flurry, a
US-based mobile analytics company, app usage grew by 58% year-on-year during
2015, and time spent using mobile devices grew by 117%.
People spend hours and hours on their phones
and we now have multiple solutions for keeping our documents, including cloud
computing, mobile hard disk drive and etc. However, many still think the
hardcopy printing market still have a lot of opportunities.
Mike Huster, Director, Competitive
Intelligence, told RT Media, “We do
not see paperless, but instead 'less paper' until such time that the millennial
generation takes over as managers. If you look at the OEMs, most have extended
the product life cycle from 18 months - 4 years to the current 5-6 years. This
has occurred because there has been a decrease in printing and an increase in
capturing, scanning, storage, and retrieval of data (digital) for use in line-of-business
applications.”
So if there should be a way to add value by
combining the digitalization and hardcopy, mobile printing can be an option. In
fact, this technology still has a long way to go.
David Gibbons, Director of RT Media, had a question for all
attendees at the RT Imaging Summit-Europe 2016. He asked, “Please put your hand
up if you have never tried to print documents directly from your phone to a
printer.” All were astonished to find that 90% put their hands up. Almost
everyone in the summit room had never tried.
Does that mean mobile printing is not
working? Drivve’s CEO, Thilo Lutzeler sees potential in this technology and
shared many insights with the attendees on site. Later, Lutzeler told RT Media, “As revolutions go, the mobile
printing revolution is a stealthy one. Never as eloquently declared as the
American Revolution, nor as keen to decapitate elites as the French, nor as
anti-bourgeois as the Russian, it is nonetheless gaining steam.”
Lutzeler will again share his latest views
at the 2016 RemaxWorld Summitin Zhuhai China.
With the topic of “The Advent of Mobile Printing—how does this threaten and
give new opportunities for printing supplies,” Lutzeler will share his views on
the latest mobile printing trends and provide some ideas on how to find the
opportunities with the technology.
According to
Recycling Times Media Corporation, the organizer of RemaxWorld Summit, industry elites will share their latest
information, cutting edge intelligence and business insights. The organizer
expects this 10th event to host over 200 attendees.

Only 10% Space Left in the New “Copier
Consumables Zone”
A
hot sale is on for the remaining spaces in the new exhibition zone for copier
consumables at RemaxWorld Expo 2016.
Numerous
copier consumable enterprises—such as Pointrole and Zhuhai Dinglong—are excited
about the new zone. According to organisers—Recycling Times Media (RT Media)—more
than 30 domestic copier consumables companies—including Yinyou, Shuangyi and Zhenyou—will
organize buyer groups to attend the exhibition zone which will exceed 600m2.
With just two months until the expo, less than 10% of the booth spaces remain.
RT
Media’s sales manager Kevin Zhu says he cannot believe how quickly the space
has sold out. “With the trend for mergers in office consumable businesses, a
new special exhibition zone for copier consumables will be launched at the
RemaxWorld Expo to better serve visitors during the three-day expo.” He says
exhibitors are very enthusiastic about the new zone, looking “for a piece” of
the 13,000 visitors coming to buy products at the printing consumables fair.
New opportunities with more business
According
to the visitor survey at last year’s event, more than 43.7% expressed their
desire to purchase copier consumables and were looking for suitable suppliers. In
response, 40 copier consumables companies have already reserved their booth
spaces. The remaining spaces are expected to sell out by mid-August.
Special zone with better promotions
A
special campaign before and during the expo itself, will enhance the new zone
to the visitors. This includes a special colored carpet and uniquely designed
booths, signage and other onsite promotional directions at the event.

Used Toner Cartridges Transformed into Art
A New York-headquartered
software company is showing off its new range of furniture—all made from waste.
The newly inspired fifth
series of Bloomberg's furniture, Waste Not Want It, are almost entirely made
from the bits of the company's computer peripheral equipment, according to
TonerNews. The stunning arts pieces include a crystal "Synthesis Bench,"
utilizing the outcome of chemical reaction between resins, tar and powder from
a used toner ink cartridge, and the solid geometric surfaces of furniture, made
of waste powder from 150 toner ink cartridges, mixed with jesmonite.
Bloomberg worked with 37
artists and designers to create the whole series from 2,000 meters of cable
flex, 152 keyboards, 160 holographic screen sheets, 250 printer cartridges and
33 wood pallets. These artworks will be available for the 4,000 Bloomberg's
employees in London.
Jemma Read, who initiated
the project in 2010, said the project had provided a platform to redefine their
relationship with waste.

MPS Leaders Identified
Four printer OEMs have
been identified as leaders when it comes to providing managed print services
(MPS)—with Lexmark being mentioned for the fifth year in a row.
The other three leaders
are Xerox, HP and Ricoh. Strong performers in MPS also included Canon, Konica
Minolta Samsung, Kyocera, Sharp and Toshiba, in that order.
The annual report,
conducted by Quocirca, is called The Managed Print
Services Landscape. It is an independent
vendor analysis of the global enterprise MPS market.
Quocirca quizzed senior
IT managers in the UK, France, Germany,
and the US,
from 200 enterprise companies with 1,000 or more employees, who use a managed
print service. Quocirca—a primary research and analysis company specializing in
the business impact of information technology—conducted the end-user online
survey during May 2016.
Each MPS vendor was also
asked to complete a written submission detailing its strategy, capabilities,
and customer references to ensure key facts and figures were captured.
Quocirca found the world
of MPS is changing. Firstly by changing customer ambitions, and secondly by new
priorities and challenges faced by the providers themselves. Quocirca points
out in the report that while MPS is delivering on cost-saving
expectations, it must play a more important role in helping organisations
realise strategic growth plans.
The research firm also
noted “the past year has seen significant changes in the print industry with
HP, Xerox and Lexmark all undergoing changes in organisation.” But warns the
OEMs consumers are looking for a provider that can demonstrate long-term
viability and stability.
The report elaborates on
Lexmark's global execution and industry expertise, noting, "A key strength
for Lexmark is its global operational capabilities. Its unique single-system
infrastructure offers MPS customers
visibility and consistency in reporting across their fleet of devices on a
country and global basis." The report went on to say, "Lexmark offers
strong expertise in helping customers streamline their business processes. In
the wider software space, Lexmark has developed strong integration between its
MFP, MPS and software products. It is successfully driving synergies between
these businesses."
Lexmark’s Marty
Canning—executive vice president and president of Imaging Solutions and
Services—was quick to respond to the Quocirca report. “Lexmark’s leadership
comes from connecting print and digital information across industry sectors
backed by strong analytics that guide business process improvements," he
said. “Five consecutive years of recognition for our integrated technology
portfolio in imaging, software and solutions to help businesses make smart
decisions and maximize their technology investment is a source of pride.”

US Customs Clears SCC's Drums
& Gears
A ruling
from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (Customs) permits Static Control
Components to sell their new drums
and gears without infringing Canon’s ‘dongle gear’ patents.
Static Control Components (SCC) has been quick
to alert the industry that their solution rids the industry of the ‘dongle
gear’ issue that has plagued the Aftermarket industry for almost two years.
According to a SCC statement shared with
customers, the iconic US-based parts and components company declares that
products containing its SafeDrive Technology “do not infringe upon the dongle
gear patents that were the focus of a GEO issued last year.”
In addition, Charles R. Steuart, Chief of the
Intellectual Property Division, states in the letter, “The redesigned toner
cartridges and drum units to be
imported by Static Control, do not infringe upon the ‘278, ‘564, ‘215, ‘008 and
‘009 patents. As such, the instant cartridges and drum
units are not subject to exclusion from entry for consumption into the United States,
entry for consumption from a foreign-trade zone, or withdrawal from a warehouse
for consumption.”
Further, Static Control noted its patented
designs “center on a retractable mechanism that works with the interior
geometry of the printer to engage and disengage.” The company added that both
lever and button designs of Static Control “are patented and covered by this ruling.”
A complete list of products impacted by this
decision is shown as follows:

New Standards for MPS Established
An authoritative,
non-profit, information technology (IT) organization based in the USAhas released two new standards for providers of managed printing and security
firms.
As reported by
Channelweb, these two standards are the third and fourth in a series of
standards unveiled by US-based CompTIA after the company removed the old Trustmark certifications earlier this year.
According to CompTIA,
one standard for managed print providers is the Channel Standard for Managed
Print Providers. It covers the vital business areas of Managed Print providers,
including business generation, delivery and operations, customer relations, and
business direction.
Likewise, the other
standard for security firms is The Channel Standard for Cyber Security. It is
drawn from a framework of the National Institute of Standards and Technology in
the U.S.This standard aims at providing guidelines for business practices in five
security areas of identifying, protecting, detecting, responding and
recovering.
The Senior Vice
President of events and education at CompTIA, Kelly Ricker, stated, "As a
vendor-neutral tech trade association, we believe in providing tools to advance
the industry. The channel standards are just one example of how, through
sharing knowledge and ideas, we can help channel partners operate more
effectively."

HP Gets More Serious About 3D Printing
Following recent
acquisitions, HP expects to build a united end-to-end 3D ecosystem, integrating
everything from 3D scanning to imaging, and 3D printing.
HP wants to use the
innovative 3D hardware and software assets of two German-based companies,
namely David Vision Systems and David 3D Solutions. The acquisition of these
companies will help the OEM evolve Sprout and advance their presence in the
Immersive Computing, 3D printing and 3D scanning markets
Louis Kim, Global Head
& General Manager of Immersive Computing at HP, explained, “Adding the
David companies’ technology and capability strengthens our ability to create
the world’s only end-to-end 3D ecosystem, from creation, to 3D on-ramp, to 3D
print off-ramp via HP’s Jet Fusion Solution. The acquisition adds a robust,
stable and production-ready solution, along with a rich software development
platform to HP’s portfolio of technologies.”
As reported by
Tonernews, the current 3D scanning market is worth US billion. Less than two
months ago, HP created a lot of buzz by unveiling the HP Jet Fusion 3D
Printer—up to ten times faster than competing machines and capable of cutting
down production costs by up to 50 percent.
Further, HP has begun
working with French chemical specialist Arkema to increase the range of
industrial 3D printing materials. Then, just a two weeks ago HP revealed plans
to invest ˆ60 million (US million) a year into a 3D printing R&D center
in Spain.

Global Printer Supplies Market to Top Billion
Driven by increasing
demand for inkjet and wireless printers, the global printer supplies market is
predicted to reach a market value of more than US billion by 2020.
So says market research
company techavio. The
research reveals that the OEM segment dominated the market with more than 82%
market share in terms of revenue in 2015. Due to factors such as customers’
perceptions that OEM supplies are reliable, durable and of high quality, the
OEM segment will continue to lead the market for many years to come.
Geographically speaking,
the Americascontinue to lead the print supplies market, holding a 38% share of the global
market in 2015. Thanks to the ongoing demand for inkjet printers and color
laser printers in the region, particularly in U.S.,
the Americasmade significant contribution to the global market revenue. Wireless printers
in Americasalso demonstrated high demands due to rapid technological advancements and
increasing demand from corporates and educational institutes.
The research also analyzed
the landscape of the global printer supplies market, noting the presence of
several well-diversified players intensified competition in the market.
Currently, key vendors in this market include (in alphabetical order) Brother,
Canon, HP, Epson, Kyocera, Lexmark, and Ricoh.
Techavio’s research
findings may be considered to be at odds with that of others who see the total
value of the industry being significantly more that billion, and possibly
as much as billion. Others also state the OEM share of the consumables
market is higher than 90% in color, and as low as 75% in monochrome, with a
total share just over 20%.

Samsung Expands its C30 Series
Samsung has added two
new color models to its C30 series.
Designed for small and
medium businesses, the Color Multifunction C3060FW and Color Single Function
C3010DW promise superior graphics, greater toner capacities, and strong
performance.
With a high yield of
approximately 8,000 pages in mono and 5,000 in color, both printers are
well-equipped to cut the total cost of ownership with larger toner capacity.
Additionally, Samsung’s energy-efficient Instant Fusing System (IFS) technology
cuts costs by minimizing Total Energy Consumption when the device is sleeping,
warming up and operating, while Eco Mode saves paper by enabling two-up and
duplex printing with a simple touch of a button.
Driven by a Dual CPU
(800MHz+400MHz), the C30 series can print up to 31 pages per minute (ppm) with
an enhanced resolution up to 9600x600 dpi. Samsung’s built-in ReCP technology
ensures that even the smallest text is legible and images are crisp and
vibrant.
Both models boast a
First Print Out Time (FPOT) of as little as 9-10 seconds, with the ability to
warm up from sleep in merely 26 seconds. Moreover, both models tout a maximum
input capacity of 1,400 sheets and a waste toner box yield of up to 20,000
pages, cutting down on time spent preparing the printer for top performance and
giving employees additional time to focus on achieving key business goals.

New Zhuhai Plants To Make a Million Cartridges a Month
The Shanghaibased cartridge manufacturer—Orink Infotech International Co., Ltd. (Orink)—has
restructured its business, opening
two new plants in Zhuhai in southern China.
Located close to
Zhuhai airport, the first plant commenced operations in May manufacturing
monochrome compatible cartridges.
The second plant will
get under way this month, July, and will focus on the manufacture of color
cartridges.
According to Orink, “Our
aim is to centralize our production bases to highlight our strengths.
Previously, production was scattered over many bases resulting in huge
logistical pressures, overlapping production lines and uneven inefficient
operations.” As a result, Orink says it has closed some inefficient production
plants.
“We will ensure a
monthly output of 0.6 million plus black cartridges and 0.25 million color
cartridges with the two new plants, and an output of 1.1 to 1.2 million laser
cartridges as a whole.”
Orink expects these
changes will make them even more competitive in the global market. “Our market
competitiveness will be strengthened, so as to provide better service and
better products to our customers.”

New Solution to Distinguish OEM Firmware Upgrades
As part of its efforts
to confront OEM firmware upgrades, one leading Aftermarket company has unveiled
a solution for compatible chips to be used that will identify whether a printer
has been upgraded or not.
Print-Rite says as the
OEMs upgrade their printer upgrades more frequently, it is important for users
of compatible chips to make decisions and use components that will avoid
risks.
In 2016, Brother
released the Brother inkjet printers (Brother II), and upgraded it so that most
Aftermarket chips used on this series cannot be recognized.
Print-Rite’s new
solution helps users distinguish as follows:
Additionally, the
company claims its Aftermarket chips for use in Brother-II printers are not
affected by the upgrade and can still be identified on the printers after
testing. Print-Rite’s compatible chips for use in Brother II printers include
LC203/213/223/233/261/201/211/221/231/261/675/679.

HP’s Motion Denied
Judge
Roger T. Benitez of US District Court (Southern District of California) issued
an order denying HP’s motion to stay Memjet’s patent-infringement.
According to the document provided to RT Media, the Court has considered the
motion to stay, while the Patent and Trade Office (PTO) has not decided if it
will review HP’s request.
As revealed, HP does not object to stay of the
entire case. However, the Court “is not inclined to stay the entire case
pending a decision of the PTO to review the Memjet patent-in-suit.” Also, the
Court thinks these considerations outweigh the benefit of granting a stay at
this time. Therefore, the Court Denies HP’s Motion to Stay.
In March of this year, HP
put the Court on notice that it would move for a “Stay of Memjet’s infringement
claims, pending Inter Partes Review by the United States Patent & Trademark
Office’s Patent Trial and Appeal.” In
early April, Memjet asked the US
District Court to deny HP’s motion to halt proceedings pending an Inter Partes
Review (IPR).
In August 2015, Memjet announced
suit against HP Company in the United States District Court for the Southern
District of California, for infringing eight of its patents concerning its
page-wide "waterfall" printing technology. Later, HP filed its
Amended Answer and Counterclaims and alleges that Memjet infringed on seven HP
patents.

More Enterprises to Adopt MPS
At present, many
companies are looking to MPS (Managed Print Services) to reduce operational
expenditures through the management of employees’ printing activities and
optimizing printing workflow, due to recent economic sluggishness.
A recent report of
research company, Transparency Market Research, anticipates the revenue of MPS
will steadily grow from .18 billion in 2015 to .97 billion in 2024; while
the vertical is expected to surge with a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of
14.8% from 2016 to 2024.
Growing environmental
friendliness is also a factor that enterprises weigh in considering to adopt
MPS, because it can both significantly reduce the paper waste and enables those
businesses to use power efficiently.
After SMEs (Small and
Medium Enterprises) notice the mounting efficiency merits of MPS, they probably
will drive its growth in the vertical. Channel partners and System Integrators
will also be open to the unprecedented growth as cloud based deployments create
new opportunities.
The report stated, “SMEs
sector, lead MPS vendors have turned to channel partners in order to expand
their customer base by targeting untapped opportunities. Furthermore,
cloud-based deployment was the largest segment of the MPS market in 2015 and is
likely to dominate over the forecast period.”
Nowadays enterprises
such as Ricoh, Konica Minolta, Xerox, Toshiba, Canon etc. are taking hold of
the MPS market in order to add more channel partners for earning a larger
market share of MPS.

IDC:
Global LFP Shipments Grew Slightly in Q1 2016
As reported by the
International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Large Format Printer
Tracker, global large format printer (LFP) shipments grew 1.2% year over year
(YOY) in Q1 2016 (1Q16) with an increase of nearly 7% in hardware revenue.
Shipments in the large
format CAD/Technical printer market segment increased by 1.6% YOY in 1Q16 while
hardware revenue registered a growth of 13.2%. Much of this growth was
attributed to HP PageWide and KIP 800-series color printers.
Total shipments in the
large format graphics segment were up by 0.6% YOY while revenue increased 2.8%
over the same period. The durable graphics segment drove the growth with a
global increase of more than 9.5% geared by UV-curable inkjet, Latex,
eco-solvent, and dye-sublimation inkjet printers.
In terms of vendor
performance, the top five global suppliers in 2015, in order, HP, Canon, Seiko
Epson, Roland DG, and Mimaki, all maintained their ranking in Q1 2016.
HP dominated large
format CAD/technical and Latex segments and had almost twice the total market
share of any other vendor in the large format business. Canon, combined with
Oce, increased its large format printer shipment share from 18.8% to over 20%
YOY. Epson introduced new eco-solvent printers in 4Q15 to help grow its LFP
share revenue. But the decline in its low-end aqueous inkjet printers offset
the share increase in Q1 2016. Ranking 4th in global large format printer
shipments , Roland DG continues to be the top supplier for durable graphics
printers. Mimaki launched new UV, eco-solvent and dye-sublimation printers in
4Q15 and 1Q16, and achieved an increase in shipments as well as market
share.

HPPP:
Green Printing for 25 Years
With the idea of
decreasing the waste on earth created by printing, HP launched the HP Planet
Partners (HPPP) 25 years ago to recycle HP printing supplies and the hardware
of any brand. The organization has expanded to 73 countries and territories,
with over 3.3 billion pounds of products and 682 million cartridges having been
recycled.
HP defined the HP Planet
Partners as a “closed-loop recycling process” intended to both satisfy the
needs of customers and lessen the negative influence on the environment.
Original HP cartridges are manufactured by converting millions of pounds of
plastic that would otherwise end up in landfills.
According to HP, it has
used over 3.3 billion plastic bottles, 50 million recycled hangers, and 177
million pounds of recycled cartridge plastic to produce the new Original ink or
toner cartridges of HP. No less than 80% of Original HP ink cartridges
and around 38% of Original HP LaserJet toner cartridges have been manufactured
with recycled plastic during the process of this closed-loop recycling.
HP’s adoption of such
approaches in its product design, recovery processes, and business models and
this revolutionary innovation produce printing supplies that are both
sustainable and satisfying to the customer without reducing the quality or
reliability of products.

Epson Retaliates?
The legal tug-o’-war
between Epson and Print-Rite continues in China. Print-Rite Fanling Trading
Company and one of Print-Rite’s distributors based in Wuhan,China have both received
notice that Epson (China)
has filed a lawsuit claiming Print-Rite’s patented ink cartridge (pictured)
infringes its patents.
Epson’s accusation has
already stirred the rumor mill, with some in the industry contacting RT Media
to say Epson is merely pointing its finger at Print-Rite in retaliation to the
latter’s action which took Epson (China)
to the YiChang Intermediate People’s Court against Epson China last
year.
The alleged infringement
involves a Print-Rite ink cartridge that is a low-volume sales item.
Print-Rite has admitted
in a statement passed on to RT Media today that its legal team is actively
responding to Epson’s claims in the courts.
The company was quick to
hose down any speculation of retaliation. “Epson filed this lawsuit with a
sincere wish to protect its own patent rights. As a time-honored corporation,
Epson has made a great contribution to the global print industry and deserves
our respect.” The Print-Rite statement, which is written in Chinese, states
“all patent holders have an active and justifiable commercial right to protect
one’s own intellectual property rights.”
According to Print-Rite,
the Aftermarket giant is an industry leader that has developed 2,536 patents of
its own, and as such, has a high respect for the intellectual property of
others, worldwide. Its focus is on manufacturing and selling non-infringing
products.
“We are the only company
in the industry to have won, twice, the China’s Governmental Patent Award
jointly awarded by SIPO and WIPO, the Golden Award of 9th China Patent Awards
with the 86T ink cartridge and the Excellence Award of 15th China Patent Awards
with the SmarTact toner cartridge. Print-Rite will surely, as always, continue
to strengthen ourselves, and lead the industry improvement in a sound direction
on the path to innovation and intellectual property rights protection.”

Ricoh’s First
3D Printer Now Available
Following HPs launch
this week comes yet another OEM—Ricoh—to introduce its first high-end 3D
printer, in Europe.
The new Ricoh AM S5500P
3D printer is said to be of strategic importance to manufacturers, particularly
those in the automotive industry, as it is designed to address specific
manufacturing needs and offers PA and PP materials support.
According to TonerNews and Global Manufacturing,
the Ricoh AM S5500P utilizes an additive manufacturing method known as SLS. It
supports a range of high function materials. Manufacturing large components and
multiple parts is easy and simple, as the printer comes with a generous build
size. The system contains numerous support mechanisms that contributes to its
high reliability, while the printer comes with Ricoh's own pre-configured
settings for use with Ricoh approved materials. Via the systems software, the
user can develop their own parameters to suit the application with access to
all settings.
Peter Williams,
Executive Vice President, Ricoh Europe, said: “The availability of the RICOH AM
S5500P and relevant end-to-end services means that European businesses now have
a single point of contact for everything related to additive manufacturing.
This makes it easier for them to understand and deploy an additive
manufacturing solution that can help improve their efficiency, productivity and
entry to new business areas. Given the relative fragmentation of the market
this is a significant development, as the printing of working parts on demand
and the creation of prototypes enables businesses to meet their evolving
manufacturing innovation needs.”
The Ricoh AM S5500P is
available now in the UK, Germany, Italy,Spain, Belgium, Luxembourgand the Netherlands.

May 13, from a group called “Lexmark Employees for Ethical Conduct.” According
to Wirth, “The group
states that U.S. national security would be comprised if the acquisition—which
must be approved by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United Stated
(CFIUS)—is approved, stating: ‘The overall risk to (U.S.) national security is
real, immeasurable and unpreventable unless the sale of Lexmark to a Chinese
firm is disallowed.’”
Apparently, the letter says that because
Lexmark’s printers use smart, digital technologies, they are “vulnerable to
hacking” and “being accessed by unauthorized users.”
The Lexmark employee coalition, as they are
identified by Wirth,
claim Lexmark printers are widely used by the U.S.armed forces and intelligence agencies, as well as in U.S. state and
local governments. The letter allegedly states, in bold type, that “Allowing a
communist country access to Lexmark hardware and firmware allows them direct
access ‘behind the firewall’ to any of these offices.”
Jackson Wang, the chairman of Apex Technology,
one of the Chinese companies involved in the buyout, told RT Mediathat Lexmark’s board
remains strong on its approval for the transaction, even though it is still
subject to shareholder and regulatory approval from agencies including the
CFIUS.
Industry experts have advised RT Media there are mature, alternative measures
that can be taken to eliminate any national security concerns. Previous cases
such as the Lenovo - IBM acquisition reveal this. RT Media has also been advised that CFIUS will
examine all the details involved in the transaction and then make a decision
after a comprehensive and prudent scrutiny. "During the process,” RT Media has been told, “the CFIUS may take the
position that any parties involved in the transaction should execute a
mitigation agreement or otherwise satisfy certain conditions in order to obtain
CFIUS approval."
Lexmark’s Chairman and CEO Paul Rooke said,
“With the Consortium’s resources, we will be able to continue to invest in and
grow the business to more fully penetrate the Asia Pacific market for hardware,
software and managed print services.” He added Lexmark’s company headquarters
would remain in Lexington, Kentucky, and that he would stay in his
current role. Shares initially rose about 11 percent in trading after the
announcement, and have continued to rise towards the .50 a share all-cash
offer being made by the consortium.
The deal is expected to close in the second half
of 2016.

Final
Termination of Epson 337-946 Investigation Announced
Seven months after the
Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) issued the Initial Determination (ID order
No.12) granting the Epson’s motion for summary determination, the U.S.
International Trade Commission (USITC) has now announced the termination of the
Epson 337-946 Investigation.
According to copies
provided to RT Media, dated on May 26, USITC has determined to issue a General
Exclusive Order (GEO) barring entry of certain ink cartridges and components
that infringe the patents asserted in this investigation and Cease and Desist
Orders (CDOs) directed against two domestic defaulting respondents, namely
California-based InkPro2day, LLC and Texas-based Zinyaw, LLC.
On December 23, 2014,
Epson filed a complaint claiming 19 respondents allegedly infringed 5 patents. Following
the complaint, the USITC instituted a 337 investigation on January 21, 2015. On
June 18, the ALJ issued ID Order No. 9 granting that 17 respondents were in
default. To save both public and private resources, Epson urged the USITC
to withdraw 19 of its
claims on 5 patents. The Administrative Law
Judge Sandra Dee Lord approved Epson’s request and granted the investigation be partially
terminated on October 28, 2015 with issuance of ID Order No. 12.

Ricoh Promotes
Recycled Plastics Usage in Next Generation MFPs
With deep concern for
the environment, Ricoh has developed a new reclaimed material for use in
manufacturing its Next Generation MFPs.
The new material,
jointly developed by NIPPON STEEL & SUMIKIN CHEMICAL CO., LTD. and Ricoh,
will use plastic packaging containers collected in compliance with the
Containers/Packaging Recycling Act, as well as plastics collected in accordance
with the Act for Recycling of Specified Kinds of Home Appliances. In
addition, technology from GREEN CYCLE SYSTEM CORPORATION ensures that
impurities are eliminated.
According to the OEM,
the newly developed material is classified as high grade plastic material and
has improved fire retardancy and strength, due to the reforming technology from
NIPPON STEEL & SUMIKIN CHEMICAL and recycling materials evaluation
technology from Ricoh.
Generally speaking, the
quality of plastic materials deteriorate with each regeneration, however, Ricoh
managed to develop a recycled material that maintains quality with the support
of its technology for evaluating the material in accordance with long-term
deterioration criteria.
Ricoh believes that
using the newly developed reclaimed material and the recycled material (i.e.
reclaimed material from Ricoh's products collected in closed loop recycling)
will help increase the rate of recycled material used in its MFPs.

HP
Launches 337 Investigation Against Memjet
HP has filed its first
complaint of 2016 to the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC),
requesting that USITC institute a 337 investigation concerning certain Inkjet
printers, printheads, and ink cartridges thereof, as well as products
containing the same.
According to copies of
HP’s submission, provided to RT Media, HP accused 25 companies of infringing 6
of its U.S.patents Nos.US6260952B1; US6270201B1; US6491377B1; US7004564B2; US7744202B2,
and US7090343B2. The proposed respondents include:
- 6 Memjet’s Asia-based manufacturing
operations and Memjet’s OEM partnerships;
- 12 Memjet distributor respondents as well
as other distributors of infringing Memjet printheads and/or ink
cartridges;
- 7 OEM respondents as well as other Memjet
OEM partnerships.
The document also shows
that all of “Memjet-powered” inkjet printers, printheads, and ink cartridges
are included in the accused products.
To deny the accused
products from entering into U.S.,
HP seeks a permanent General Exclusion Order (GEO) and a limited GEO as an
alternative. HP also seeks permanent cease and desist orders prohibiting
the proposed respondents, their subsidiaries, related companies, and agents
from engaging in the importation, sale for importation, sale after importation,
offering for sale, marketing and/or advertising, distribution, use after
importation, or transfer (except for export) within the U.S. on the products
accused of infringing one or more claims of the asserted patents.
Currently, the USITC is
reviewing the case and institution of the investigation is still pending.
