The worlds first hybrid MFP
has been revealed by Toshiba Tec Corp.
Trade Arabia reported that the e-studio 5008LP series has
been unveiled and that they print regular black as well as erasable blue prints
“within the same device”. The company said that this series is designed for
“businesses seeking to operate more ecologically, economically and
efficiently”.
Paper can be reused when the erasable blue toner
is used and paper consumption is limited “without restricting prints and
reduces costs” as documents sued for proof reading, reviews or emails can be
reused and the toner can be selected automatically. The machine also prints out
a summary of the company’s environmental contribution.
Toshiba Tec endeavours to be a leading
eco-conscious company and Sachio Koyama, General Manager of Products, Marketing
and Service Division, Printing Solutions Business Group, Toshiba Tec, said:
“Our team is proud to announce our hybrid MFP, the signature model of our
environmentally-conscious products.
“Thanks to our unique paper reusing technology,
our latest MFP may generate regular as well as erasable prints within one
product. We believe it will help our customers function more ecologically while
still operating in an efficient and economical manner.”

An article discussed the
upsurge of demand for mobile printing solutions.
According to app developer
Magazine one
billion employees will be bringing their own devices to work by 2018 and the
“Global Mobile Printing market will see a CAGR of 32.5 percent 2014 to 2019”
analysts said.
IDC research said that 75 percent of users found
it easier to send documents from their smart phones to an MFP or the business
network using a cloud based solution with Wi-Fi being another option and mobile
workers are more productive if they can print on the go.
New generations like to print direct from social
networks, phones and iPads and the industry is responding to the growing demand
by promoting it and the article noted that “non-profit Mopria Alliance was
formed in 2013 to promote the use of mobile printing by developing standards
enabling printing from phone and other devices to printers across the
manufacturers.
Mopria developed the “Mopria mark” so that users
could identify devices that are “mobile print ready” and Mopria print is
embedded in many smart phones, iPads and other devices negating the need for
app downloads or a set up programme. Early this year the Alliance saw 500 million installations with
300 million users which goes to show how important this industry is and the
demand is down to the need for convenience.

HP Inc awarded a cartridge patent 9,618,898 that
would enable HP Inc to expand their Instant Ink programme to include toner
cartridges.
HP Inc has been awarded patent
9,618,898 and the invention
to increase the toner supply capacity in some electrophotographic printers
without also increasing the size of the printer, reducing the need for the user
to purchase replacement toner supply cartridges over the expected useful life
of the printer. In some examples, a new toner supply container is sufficiently
enlarged to eliminate the need for the user to replace the original toner
container without also increasing the size of the printer. In such examples,
the toner container may be configured as a non-removable component that
simplifies printer
The patent description states
that in some examples, a new toner supply container could be sufficiently
enlarged to eliminate the need for the user to replace the original toner
container without also increasing the size of the printer, or may be
configured as a non-removable component that simplifies printer construction, and simplifies user operation by
eliminating the need to remove a spent toner cartridge and replace it with a
new toner cartridge. Also, as a non-removable component, the toner container
may be integrated into the printer structure
as a load bearing member and/or as part of the printer exterior, thus replacing
The invention would also
enable users to purchase printing capacity incrementally, or used for both
fixed page count printers in which only the amount of toner needed to satisfy
the fixed page count is supplied with the printer, or for variable page count
printers in which the user may purchase access to additional printing capacity
using toner originally supplied with the printer.
This means that users will
not have to replace toner cartridges “over the expected useful life of the
printer” there is then no need to remove the cartridge and replace it instead
the toner container remains as part of the printer exterior.
The Recycler reported on how this technology works November 2015 when Thom Brown explained
that the device within the cartridge notifies HP and that this is based on “on
a low ink threshold and a certain time period, among other elements” that make
up the seven algorithms that calculate the procedure.
HP Inc’s Toner Cartridge
patent was issued by USPTO as Patent No 9,618,898 assigned to HP Development
Company, L.P, Houston Texas.

Russian Market of Consumable Materials in 2015-2016: Changes
and Prospects
Stanislav Malinskiy, General Director of Informational Agency
"Business-Inform"(Russia)
On October 14 I made a report on the current trends and
prospects of the Russian market of consumable materials which took place on the
exhibition RemaxWorld 2016 Expo in Zhuhai (China). This article contains the
main ideas of the report that was presented to the members of RemaxWorld 2016
Expo and the comments on it.
1. The proportion of
Russian organizations which use the compatible consumable materials has risen
from 81% to 93% in 2013-2016. However, the proportion of organizations which
target at the high quality printing with compatible consumables has decreased
from 34,6% (in 2013) to 17,4% (in 2016) while the proportion of organizations
which are guided only by the price with the purchase of consumables has
increased from 46,0% (in 2013) to 75,7% (in 2016).
2. Under conditions of
economic crisis in 2015-2016 due to the growth of purchases of cheap compatible
cartridges the proportion of compatible consumables became 20,3% (11,9 million
pcs.) while the decline in purchases of OEM cartridges led to the reduction of
their proportion to 15,3% (9,0 millions pcs.). The proportion of aftermarket
(remanufactured) cartridges has considerably risen – to 64,4% (37,9 million pcs.), and it is remarkable that the proportion of remanufactured new-built
compatible cartridges became quite significant and reached 23,3% (13,7 million
pcs.).
3. The increase in the
cheap cartridges percentage on the Russian market resulted in the totals: the
market has risen by 5,7% in pieces and has decreased by 9,8% in USD.
4. The most part of compatible cartridges that were sold on the Russian market
are the cartridges which quality rating is 0.4-0.55. Despite the fact that the
average quality rating of the worst cartridges has increased from 0.34 in 2013
to 0.45 in 2016, the prevailing quality rating in 2016 is between 0.4 and 0.55 and
that still shows the predominance of rather low quality cartridges. The
proportion of high quality compatible cartridges with quality rating is from
0,67 to 0,72 appeared to be less considerable than in 2013-2015. This means
only that the low quality cartridges supplies on the Russian market have
increased (the volume of the deliveries of high quality compatible consumables has
not decreased in 2016).
5. The growth in the
sales of cheap low quality cartridges on the Russian market led to the fact
that the reputation of the compatible consumables among Russian customers
became considerably worse. The proportion of customers who stand assured of the
low quality of non-original consumables, which was equal 21,7% in 2014, has
reached its highest point at 35,4% in 2016. A considerable part of Russian
customers who had to use the low quality cheap consumables in 2015-2016 intend
to resume the procurement of OEM consumables if financial resources allow.
6. The importance of such factors as price, reputation of manufacturers,
reputation of corporate sellers and the possibility of remanufacturing (refill)
has considerably risen on the Russian consumables market in 2015-2016. Thus,
customers try to avoid buying products from the unknown manufacturers and from
the unknown sellers.
7. The main potential of
the Russian market of high quality compatible consumables consists in the
explanation to the major and medium-size organizational buyers of the benefits
and the economical efficiency of using the high quality compatible materials. Considering
the fact that in 2017-2018 in accordance with the federal law FZ ¹122 many
managers of the organizational units which deal with the purchase of
consumables will take an adjustment training according to the new professional
standard, there is a distinct possibility to show the potential Russian
customers the real advantages of the high quality compatible materials.

All figures presented in
this article were obtained as a result of Business-Inform market investigations

Russia Starts
Manufacturing Printers, Cartridges, and Toner
Political
sanctions and economic problems forced Russia to review its attitude towards
multiple problems including supplement of Russian businesses and organizations
with printing devices. Earlier the Russian market had office printing products
represented only by foreign manufacturers. Companies from US, Japan, Europe, and China actively competed on this
segment of Russian IT-market, offering Russian consumers a wide range of
products. Now numerous suppliers of printing devices and supplies must bunch up
for newcomers. Russiastarts to manufacture its printers, cartridges, and toners.
On
13th September 2016, during Import Substitution 2016 International Expo,
the first Russian MFP called “Katyusha” was presented. This Russian MFP can
function as a printer, copier, scanner, and fax. It utilizes unique paginal printing
technology based on stationary printing head and innovational pigment dyes.
Katyusha MFP provides high-quality full-color printing at 50-75 ppm speed range
and 2400õ2400 dpi resolution.
The
Russian MFP is unit-compiled. Basic build includes printer with sensor LCD
control display. Depending on the requirements of the user, printer might be
compiled with a scanner, copier, or a fax. The MFP uses unique system of double-cartridges
(page yield = 50000 pages). After the main dye container has been emptied, the
system automatically switches to additional container. Each cartridge can be replaced
while printing, the dyes in this case are supplied from the remaining one.
The
Russian MFP was developed by Service Systems Company (Russia, Moscow)
in partnership with PromWAD (electronic engineering), Baikal Electronics (Russian
processing units), XaaR (printing technologies), Alexinskiy Chemical Plant (chemical
production). The project is supported by Industry Development Fund of the
Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade and by venture fund of CommIT Capital
(Rostelecom).
The
first key consumers planned for the new Russian MFP are state businesses
engaged in servicing citizens and having archive functions. Katyusha MFP will
also be used on the markets of financial, medical, and cadastral services. The
Russian MFP will be available for sale in mid-2018. The planned amount of sales
is 65000 MFPs a year.
Another
Russian company, Rostoner, plans to start already in 2017 the production of one
or two-component monochrome toner as well as cartridges for laser printers and
copiers. During the first stage Rostoner plans to acquire from German company INTEGRAL
GmbH a continuous type production line, the cartridges are planned to be
custom-made. During the second stage, two years after beginning of the
production, Rostoner plans to completely switch to local raw materials and
organize (at the production site) a competence center involving leading
specialists in the field.
Rostoner
cartridges and toners will be procured in the first place by state companies and
state organizations. Russian products will cost less than imported analogs
since there are no costs for international logistics and no customs fees. Also there
are financial benefits of the special economic zone Alabuga in Tatarstan (Russia),
where the production site will be placed. Also toner production won’t require
large electricity fees, since electricity prices are low in Russia.
The
complete budget of the project is already estimated at 619 million rubles (9.5 million USD). Industry Development Fund
of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade already approved a 300 million rubles five-year loan for Rostoner at 5% interest
per annum. Rostoner plans to acquire up to 7% of the Russian market by
producing around 2.8 million cartridges and 350 tons of toner.
The production site involving staff of 74 people is planned to start
manufacturing during 2016Q4. It plans to reach full capacity by 2018Q1.
The
production of the Russian-made printers, cartridges, and toners can change the
situation on the Russian IT-market already by 2017-2018. You can learn more by
visiting seminar hosted by Information Agency “Business-Inform” General Director, Dr.
Malinskiy Stanislav "Changes in
the Russian Market of Printing Supplies between 2015 - 2016: New Possibilities
and Prospects" , which will be held on 14th of October within
the framework of international RemaxWorld Expo 2016 (Zhuhai, China, Zhuhai International
Convention & Exhibition Center).

2016 International EXPO – Main Results
On 24-26 of May, in Moscowat VDNH, Pavilion 69, BUSINESS-INFORM 2016 International Office Equipment,
Supplies, and Parts Exhibition took place. The organizer of the expo was
Russian Information Agency “Business-Inform” (Moscow) (www.sforp.ru).
The exhibitors were 78 companies from Russia,China, USA, Japan,Korea, Germany, Lithuania,Kazakhstan.
Among the exhibitors the biggest groups were companies from Russia (32) and China (37). USA and Germany were represented by 2
companies each (http://sforp.ru/BI2016eng/exhibitors.htm).
The exhibition was visited by more than 2400 specialists. Besides the
management of the Russian seller-companies (31% of visitors) the expo also attracted
interest of the Russian buyer-companies (22% of visitors). The biggest part of
the visitors came from the various Russian regions (76 cities and towns). The
exhibition was also visited by guests from USA,Japan, China, Spain,Germany, Czech Republic,Netherlands, Malaysia, Kazakhstan,Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tadzhikistan,Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Belarus, and Estonia.
Visitors were largely attracted by BUSINESS-INFORM 2016 International
Conference, taking place simultaneously with the expo in the smaller conference
hall of Pavilion 69 VDNH (http://sforp.ru/BI2016eng/list.htm).
During this Conference the representatives of leading companies from the
industry of office printing, shared the views on current manufacturing and
promotion problems for the world and the Russian markets, evaluated main market
tendencies, shared their forecasts. 22 reports, presented during the conference,
were visited by 900 specialists. The majority of them got the opportunity not
only to listen to the leading industry specialists, but do discuss the issues
of interest with them. The reports that attracted the most interest were
dedicated to the recent Canon solutions, printing outsourcing, MDS/MPS-solutions,
printing quality evaluation, and marketing in various segments of the Russian
supplies market.
On May 25 within the framework of BUSINESS-INFORM 2016 Expo the second Conference
named: Two Views on Office Equipment Consumables Procurement and Usage. Myths
Destroyed by the Crisis, took place, organized by the Information Agency
"Business-Inform" (Russia)
and AEPP Association (the Association for Administrative-Economic Professionals
of Russian Businesses and Organizations). During the Conference the leading
office equipment and supplies companies specialists presented their reports (Canon,
Static Control, Delacamp, Komus, Ramis, Veneta System), as well as specialists
from corporate buyer-companies (Renaissance Credit
Bank, Oktanika, etc.). Within the framework of the Conference a real
discussion of corporate office printing supplies procurement problems was
organized.
BUSINESS-INFORM 2016 exhibition has been
anniversary. The show has taken place for the 5th time. And anniversary
celebration is a place for presents. That is why every visitor was presented for
free by expo organizers with a new Printing Supplies catalog (issue 35, 2016), BUSINESS-INFORM
Magazines (issues 10 and 11, 2016), passwords to the pay-sections of Information
Agency “Business-Inform” web-site (printer, copier, MFP, supplies and their
compatibility catalogs). The representatives of state
companies and organizations have been able to subscribe for free for all
Agency’s 2016 publications on the organizers booth.
All the exhibitors also got presents: the Agency’s
news web-site - www.printnews.biz – provided a possibility for
exhibitors to publish and spread company’s news for free, and BUSINESS-INFORM Review
magazine (http://sforp.ru/birevieweng/)
allowed them to publish articles and notes of company’s specialists.
Both exhibitors and visitors showed interest in Russian supplies market
leading companies’ award ceremony that took place on 24 of May in a smaller
conference-hall of Pavilion 69 VDNH. 16 companies and 3 specialists from
various parts of the world were awarded with “Focus on Quality” prize. The Expo’s Organizers plan on making this
ceremony traditional.
Many participants noted the considerable growth
of visitors numbers compared with 2012-2014 (during 2013-2014 the Expo was
visited by 1500-1700 annually, during 2015-2016 – more than 2300), as well as
that visitors became more active. According to majority of exhibitors and
visitors of BUSINESS-INFORM 2016, informational events (expos, conferences,
seminars) are acquiring more and more importance in Russia. Only systematic provision
of information by the leading industry representatives, open discussion of new
products, tendencies, and problems will allow the Russian market to become
up-to-date and quick-to-react to emergence of new and perspective technical and
technological solutions on the world market. In the end, most exhibitors have
already confirmed their participation in the next BUSINESS-INFORM 2017
International Office Equipment, Supplies, and Parts Exhibition (Moscowà,VDNH, May 2017).

International Conference «Two Views on Office Equipment Consumables
Procurement and Usage»
On May
25th, within the framework of BUSINESS-INFORM 2016 Office Equipment
Supplies and Parts International Exhibition, the second Conference named: Two Views on Office Equipment Consumables
Procurement and Usage. Myths Destroyed by the Crisis, took place. The Conference
was visited by more than 150 specialists in administrative activities from
state and commercial structures, and
by more than 100 specialists from supplier-companies, office equipment, toner
and inkjet cartridges, office paper, and components manufacturers. The Conference
sponsors were: Komus, Veneta System, CommPass, Ramis, Delacamp, Sindoh. All
Conference visitors were greeted by fragrant morning coffee (provided by CommPass company) and by the BUSINESS-INFORM
2016 exhibitors booths.
The
Conference complimentary adress was given by Bagmanyan Olesya Valerjevna, President of Administrative
Specialists Union Association. In
her speech she touched upon the lack of profile eduction for administrative
specialist. “According to our view the reason for this lies in the fact that
with transitions of our country towards market economy necessary attention
hadn’t been paid to formation of unified specialists cores responsible for corporate
ecomonic-administrative activities. The expertise of former soviet
“superintendents” hadn’t been in demand in the new economic circumstances. Starting
from the end of the 90s, Russian companies have unassistedly began to adopt European
or American experience for executing of administrative activities trying to
adopt it to Russian conditions. This in turn led to emergence of varied
position names within organizations’ official curriculums, and to the absence
of universal duty instructions for
this type of speciality. Our Association aims to assist the emergence of the
profile education within state educational establishments. It has developed
professional standard "Administrative Operations Specialist" and took
part in forming programs for additional education. The Association implements
the projects of expertise exchange in the administrative sphere. Todays
Conference will allow the audience to receive additional knowledge in the field
of consumables procurement and receive colleagues positive experience”, - told
Olesya.
In his report Malinskiy Stanislav Valterovich,
General Director of the Information Agency "Business-Inform" (Russia),
demonstrated the scheme of the office laser printing supplies market and
analyzed the role and behavior of its various participants: buyers, sellers,
manufacturers, and their various distributors, informational field, and
legislation. The main resume made by the speaker is that on today’s market no
one explains the economic benefits of using quality products to the buyer. The
discussion regarding economic benefits is usually done on professional
exhibitions and conferences with either manufacturer or distributor-companies
present. And so the buyer remains outside this field of discussions and explanations!
As a result in the procurement process the Russian buyer targets products of
medium quality and mild price. According to the speaker already today within
the framework of events dedicated to the vocational retraining of state,
municipal, and corporative procurement specialists, it is absolutely necessary
to pay attention to obvious demonstration of quality products procurement
economic appropriateness.
Malakhova
Ekaterina Evgenievna, General Director of
ALIANCE-ENERGO-CONSULT Educational Center, the
expert in the field of state and corporative procurements, prseneted the report
called “The Systematization of Procurement Methods and Their Legislative
Control”, which inroduced the audience to the summary of regulatory-legal
regulation of procurement system in Russian Federation, as well as to
the competitive and non-competitive methods of procurement. The report also
showed the main differences between the Federal Law 44-ÔÇ “Regarding the Contractual System in the
Sphere of Product, Works, and Services Procurements for Public and Municipal
Needs” and the Federal Law 223-ÔÇ “Regarding Product, Works, and Services
Procurements by Several Types of Legal Bodies” and the changes planned within
them. This will allow the Conference participants to be lead by this knowledge
in their commercial activities.
The
speaker on behalf of Komus was Zalozniy
Vladimir Anatolievich, the specialist in the field of printing supplies. He shared his expertise regarding the alternative
ways of reducing costs during cartridges procurement. Besides popular and well-known ways of budget
saving through buying ProMEGA Print compatible cartridges,
their refilling and remanufacturing, there are also ways of cutting costs
buying OEM cartridges. The speaker specially underlined the necessity to
correctly compile the requirements specifications, which must indicate the
supplies with high yield and double packages. It allows saving up to 15-20%
during OEM cartridges procurement. Komus takes on the responsibility of
compiling of requirements specifications together with its partners, it also
gives the recommendations on self-reliant requirements specifications
compilation by the partners.
The
speaker also noted that a serious procurement costs reduction can be achieved
in the field of OEM HP cartridges. Using Komus as an example the speaker review
SBD-contract working scheme. To take part a partner needs to reconcile with
Komus its annual HP cartridges requirement. After that Komus makes contract
with HP on supplying cartridges to the partner on special supplying conditions.
Thanks to this working scheme, Komus helps its partners to get the prices much
lower than on the market. Partner using HP cartridges form more than 100,000
USD gets to the next level of cooperation and can get the right to buy
contractual HP cartridges. Contractual HP cartridges are the ones supplied by
HP only for large and key partners. The discount (compared with price of
regular cartridges) can reach 25-35%.
Kirillov
Maxim Vladimirovich, Administrative
Director of Renaissance Credit Bank, told about the particular moments of
office equipment usage by example of his bank, which has a large network of the
offices across the whole Russia.
He marked the challenges arising when the equipment gets out of order and
shared variants of solutions, which not only allow to overcome the arising
issues but also to optimize the costs of office equipment usage.
Veneta
Sytem Holding presented its views regarding myths of ecomic printing with
compatible and refilled cartridges. Loginov
Igor Alexandrovich, General Director of Veneta System Holding told about
the consequences, which might arise because of the decision to use compatible
clone cartridges in search of savings in the times of the Crisis. Searching for
alternative economic printing siolution one must take thought regarding
long-term results: savings, undisturbed business processess, one’s own company
reputation, and (what is no less important) the ecologic balance. Compatible
cartridges are not the solution, the issues must be solved only via correct
approach towards equipment choice and organizing of undisturbed economic and
green printing, starting with printing equipment procurement ending with its
disposing. “And if business (including our customers) already made their choice
towards optimization of printing process based on the remanufactured cartridges,
public organizations are still tying themselves to the price not to the quality.
How can the public organizations solve this problem? They must make bids not
for buying cartridges, but for organizing undirsturbed paper workflow, only all
services in a bundle.” So said Loginov Igor.
Egmenova Natalia Alexeevna, the head of "Administrative Operations
Specialist" professional standard developers, the inspector of AEPP
Association, underlined the role that must be played by the above professional
standard in the future within the framework of building the relationships
between the employee and the employer, and the goals that must be achieved after
development and approval of the professional standard.
The AEPP Association and
Information Agency "Business-Inform" were approached by Archpriest Ivanov Dmitry Ivanovich, the headmaster of the Holy Duke Alexander Nevsky Orthodox School in the town of Kineshma (Ivanovskaya region) with recourse. For the first time within the
framework of professional industrial conference words were spoken about
spirituality, mercy, morality restoration among students. Father Dmitry told about the
achievements and current problems of the orthodox school. They cannot expect
help from anyone except from kind hearted people willing to help.
After the break Malinskiy Stanislav Valterovich in his
report “Price Is More Important than Quality! What next?” demonstrated the
statistics of sales of office laser printing supplies in 2015 in Russia. The
lack of funds forced Russian consumers to turn towards cheap products of
dubious quality in their procurements. As a result in 2015 among Russian consumers the
amount of people dissatisfied with the quality of compatible supplies has grown. Regardless of whether it was
low quality newly made cartridges of quality remanufactured OEM cartridges. Mr. Malinskiy showed that
further growth of low quality cheap cartridges supplying into Russia will lead to the loss of credit towards
the whole range of compatible products among Russian consumers, which in turn
would lead to harsh declining of compatible products procurements should the
economic condition improve in Russia.
In his speech Thomas Spiker, Commercial Director of Delacamp AG (Germany), turned
to cartridge remanufacturing as a necessary part of resource saving and a part
of circular economy conception. The only thing that is ecologically reasonable
is remanufacturing of cartridges, however it can be of different levels: from
simple refills (with the use of cheap materials) to high level remanufacturing
with the use of matched components and high quality toner. German
remanufacturing industry companies are striving to re-use as much OEM
components as possible, and in case of replacement necessity they use high
quality materials, specially matched for better interaction with other
components. A special attention is paid to multi-step input and output quality
control. Unlike manufacturers of low price segment, German remanufacturers are
thinking not only about the selling price, but also about various reputation
expenditures, logistics and service costs, and delay compensations. They are
trying to offer the highest possible level of quality with the reasonable price.
Having told about the German remanufacturers, the speaker expressed his support
for Russian remanufacturing industry companies, striving to comply with the
level of quality and technologies.
Belikov Evgeny
Petrovich, General Director of Ramis began his report with the comparison.
In the 90s on the market of compatible materials for dot-matrix printers the
same process (constant emergence of cheaper alternatives) took place. It was
accompanied with the decline of quality and ended only with disappearance
(except for specialized areas) of matrix printers from the market. In the
industry of laser cartridges remanufacturing it can also be seen, how the high
quality Japanese manufacturers, having fortified themselves in certain areas,
gradually gave away their market share first to the Korean and later to the
Chinese companies. However it would be shortsighted to identify the level of
Chinese manufacturers as low. During the last ten years they made a serious
dash and are able to offer products of different quality level, up to the very
high one but at a corresponding price. For instance, Mito,
one of the leading Chinese manufacturers, while selling on US market, uses
Japanese OPCs in its cartridges, and while selling on the Russian market, uses
Chinese ones. Therefore the quality level depends not only on manufacturer but
also on the level of price Russian consumers are ready to pay (and they often
chose the low price category). There is a method of defining cartridge quality
with 0 to 1 scale. According to Business-Inform agency the peak of procurements
is at 0.43, while the border-line for “acceptable” quality lies at 0.67. Ramis
supplies cartridges of various price and quality levels: Uniton Premium – the
highest quality level, Uniton Eco – quite high, ATM – “text” quality. However
even ATM cartridges are well above 0.67, and Uniton Premium cartridges have the
highest performance on the market.
Evzhenko Sergei Vladimirovich, Chairman of Oktanika,
thinks that savings on the printing are not only possible, but necessary as
well! The main thing is to decide on the optimal quality of prints depending on
business specificities and working processes structure
in the company. And real savings need a right choice of:
- equipment for quality solving of existing tasks (taking into
consideration the price, usage and maintenance specificity, other equipment
parameters, and printing technologies);
- responsible consumables and office fleet maintenance or outsourcing
suppliers (depending on the range, amount and complicity of office equipment);
- printing supplies: new OEM or compatibles/remanufactured (taking into
consideration the possibility to refill).
Kuznetsova Irina Alekseevna, a well-known specialist in the field of
administrative activity with 30 years spent in Sovintel, Shell, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and VTB Bank, added to the words of Mr.
Malinsky. “The compiling of the specification requirements for tenders and the
description of necessary characteristics of a product being bought is the most
important part of the procurement process. Those responsible for procurements
cannot be in-depth all-markets specialists. Due to this she recommended to
contact several sources for creating tender specification requirements:
- Specialists of manufacturer-companies or their dealers. However the
offside here is that they speak in depth regarding only one product, and that
is theirs. One must contact several/many manufacturers/dealers to get the
information
- Specialists of your own organization working with those products or professionals
in this field. The offset here is that they may not know the whole market of
such products, but they surely know the characteristics of products they need.
- Colleagues working in the same-sized organizations. One can find out
what they are using and what positive and negative sides such products have.
“Such multi-sided approach will help you to identify the necessary
product and chose it from the ones offered during the tender”, - told Irina.
Korchagin Mikhail, the representative from Canon, thinks that the organizations firstly
look at the quality criteria of printing equipment fleet optimization. It is a collection of measures that include the reduction of equipment
amount, the management of consumables, etc. However the quantity criteria are
no less important. Quality approach towards reducing the amount of printing
doesn’t only allow optimizing printing costs but also optimizes working
processes within various departments. The best way to achieve such performance
is to introduce software tools for collection of personalized statistics on
printing and forming reports on different criteria for those interested within
the organization.
Quite friendly atmosphere, as well as a chance of
visiting BUSINESS-INFORM 2016 expo (and to directly review the preferences of
the printing equipment and supplies presented by the exhibitors), added to the
success of the Conference.

The future of the print industry
Is MPS causing the
print market to decline?
The business world is trying to
operate using less hard copy and “home users” appear to favour “mobile devices
and cloud storage” over desktop printers, but will this have a detrimental
affect on the print market, asks PRS in an article.
In a research report from
CONTEXT, it was reported that “all major Western European (WE) countries
registered negative unit sales performance across distribution in Q1 2016,
except for Italy”.
Zivile Brazdziunaite, Imaging Market Analyst for CONTEXT, said: “Sales of
business-targeted inkjet printers continue to increase by three per cent
year-on-year in WE distribution, while the revenue was flat in Q1 2016. This is
mainly due to a strong performance of Epson, while sales of HP business-
targeted inkjets declined for the quarter.
“In contrast, the performance of
consumer-targeted inkjet printers continue to decline across WE distribution,
due to continuous weakening of the demand and increased usage of mobile
devices.”
It appears that it is harder to
sell printers, but Jacqueline Hendriks, Manager of European MPS and Document
Solutions, points out that even though printing is declining this has created a
demand for “printer and document related services”. Hendriks said: “We talk
continually about the eventual paperless office and although IDC’s 2016 Western
European SMB end-user survey results indicate the gradual move towards digital
content, this has two effects – on the one hand, it is a key factor for a
decrease in print volumes.
“On the other hand, as more
information is received in digital format or scanned, it also drives an
increase in some companies – the amount of digital information received is
growing exponentially and, although they are printing a significantly smaller
percentage of what they receive, in some companies this still constitutes an
overall print volume increase.
“The Western European print
services market continues to grow in Europe,
fuelled by the business need to reduce overall operational costs as well as
increase productivity and efficiency, through the implementation of better
print and document management solutions.”
This is where MPS comes in, and
Brother UK Managing Director Phil Jones added: “There is still plenty of MPS
opportunity out there, particularly in the SMB space. At the high-end
enterprise level, customers are well served and mostly already under contract
so the battleground remains in the SMB sector. There is still plenty of MPS
opportunity out there, particularly in the SMB space.”
Stuart Mizon, Midwich’s
Divisional Director, also commented: “While larger end users may already
be using MPS in some way, shape or form, there is a huge number of SMEs who
have little or no idea of their print costs within their businesses. Print
services can be offered in many different shapes and sizes and a tailored
approach can be taken to ensure it meets the needs of all users.”
On the future of the print
market, Jones noted: “There will be fewer players for sure, with a number of
vendors up for sale or recently sold, consolidation remains a key theme. The
race to get pages under contract will hot up too so it’s vital the channel
builds capability with managed services at all levels.”
Louise Witchell from John Lewis
concludes: “The printer market growth will continue to slow and the levels of
growth will diminish. At key times of the year like ‘back to school’ and ‘off
to university’ there will still be a demand for printers and for families, but
I think other customer groups will decline.
“The market in the future will
see printers becoming a potential feature within the connected home story. They
will become smaller and more compact with improved functionality. As people
print less, the convenience and ease of use will play a factor in whether a
customer decides to purchase a printer.”

Static Control collaborates with Russian distributor
The largest
manufacturer of aftermarket imaging systems and components worked alongside its
official distributor TEKO in Moscow.
The two companies collaborated at
the fifth Business Inform Expo in Moscow,
Russia from 24
to 26 May, where both met “face-to-face with customers”, and showed off new
products as well as “discuss[ing] the latest innovations”. Two of the company’s
staff made presentations at the event as well, with Distribution Manager for Eastern Europe, Sophie Lillie, presenting Innovation,
quality and consistency, opportunity, recapping “the most recent developments
at the company”.
In turn, Static Control’s Toner
Development Manager Patrick Livengood spoke about “advances in low-melt toners
for new colour and monochrome printer/MFP applications”, showcasing the
company’s development process for toner and “what the future will bring”. The
company was also presented with a ‘Focus on Quality’ award at the show.
Juan Carlos Bonell, Static
Control’s Vice President of Distributor Markets, stated: “We wanted to share
our experience and our dedication to working with remanufacturers and imaging
providers to develop the products that are needed and requested. Each new
product offers an opportunity for businesses to save money compared to OEM
supplies and expand product inventory. We take quality seriously. The steps
that we take to deliver a quality product are unmatched in the industry so to
be recognised for this is an honour.”
In turn, Livengood commented:
“With the fuser temperatures being lowered in many printers, it is important
for the aftermarket to be able to develop high quality, low melt toners. In
2015, we achieved this when our team launched the first polyester CPT set,
PolySphere, and we are planning to release several new color and monochrome PolySphere
formulation throughout this year.”

VOW announces Kyocera anti-counterfeiting partnership
The dealer has said it
is “supporting and working with Kyocera to tackle the threat of counterfeit
products in the UK”.
Dealer Support reported on VOW’s partnership with Kyocera on the OEM’s campaign to “educate customers and partners on the risks incurred
by buying counterfeit consumables”. This campaign, which has recently been updated by the OEM and seen more information
about challenges, comes in response to the “rising scale of the problem”.
An increase in the amount of
counterfeit cartridges seized year-over-year has also fed into this, with VOW
telling its resellers to contact their account manager “for further details”.
Stuart Bleese, Category Manager for Technology at VOW, noted that “these
counterfeit products are made to painstakingly replicate all aspects of the
original products, from the branding to the packaging, which makes it extremely
difficult for people to spot the ‘fakes’.
“Moreover, they’re sold at
tempting low prices, making them an attractive alternative to genuine products.
However, the consequences of using these counterfeit products, either in error,
or knowingly as a cost saving, can be hugely detrimental to quality and output.
Simply put, it’s dangerous to use or for resellers to sell to their customers
as there is no way of knowing what’s inside a product. The only way to be sure
that you are purchasing a genuine product is to do so from an official KYOCERA
partner such as VOW”.

24.06.2016 Ricoh discusses
ageing workforce
At an EMEA event focused on
“technology as a driver for change”, OEMs talked about the challenges this
presents.
Enterprise
Times reported on the event, with Senior
Vice President of Human Resources from Ricoh, Bev Cunningham, stating that she
is worried about “an ageing workforce of 7,000 printer engineers”. Because
printers can be repaired or maintained remotely, this decreases the necessity
for engineers, but the OEM has a long history of “promoting long service” and
tries to avoid redundancies.
However, Ricoh has recognised a new “gap
in the market” and has the contract to “install and maintain the Amazon drop
boxes” that are increasing globally. Cunningham said that it was ironic ,as the
arrival of drones may in the end take over the click and collection sites. She
added that “I cannot transform all 7,000 engineers away from their role, but I
can do some”.
During the discussion, other companies
concurred with Ricoh’s problem and discussed the change in office roles and
cloud-based services as well as new technologies to update their business, or
“retain talent”. Ricoh is a company that invents technology, including 3D
printing and inkjet patents, and is said to understand that 3D printing will be
unsettling to manufacturing. Cunningham commented that“printing is
not dead – it’s just different”, referring to the recent drupa event in Germany.
Tony Glass, EMEA at Skillsoft, focused
on how new technologies have an impact on “learning, training and development”
and how this speeds up change. He noted that he wanted to examine how his
company could “build applications to support businesses in the future”,
pointing out that “by 2020 the majority of the workforce will be millennials;
don’t leave the existing generation behind”. The main outlay for businesses is
employees, and corporations often have the dilemma of an “ageing workforce”,
and the question of how to retain their talents while keeping them up-to-date.
As an example, Glass used Nokia and the
effect that technical advancement had in Finland as the demand for paper
fell. Nokia rescued the workforce, but with the “demise of the Nokia mobile
phone” there is a question of “what happens next”, although Finland is said
to be a good country in which to start up tech businesses.
Learning management systems need to be
flexible if they are used, and the training needs to benefit the company in the
present and future, as millennial employees are more temporary and lean towards
self-employment and “short term contracts”, a trend being seen in the USA. This in
itself may impact training, but businesses will still need to offer fundamental
training, and offer the initiative of training that is more advanced than the
employee’s present role.
Glass concluded that “the crystal ball
is pretty smoky” and that “learning is at the point of need”, making the point
that training needs to be available for everyone but should be conveyed
correctly. He ended the discussion by saying “the employee of today is wholly
different from the employee of yesterday”.

24.06.2016 How
to spot counterfeit cartridges
An article reviewed
the negative affects counterfeiting cartridges has on the market and what to
look out for.
Most people want a bargain as
well as quality, reports Infoblog,
but buying genuine inkjet and toner cartridges, either remanufactured or from
the OEM, is more likely to save money in the long run,
as the customer may be putting their printer at risk by using counterfeit
items. The makers of counterfeit cartridges can make them look identical to
those of the OEM by “illegally copying the design, parts and even the patents”
and creating the illusion that the consumer is getting value for money.
However, there are ways of
discerning the genuine from the illegal products, as manufacturers have ways of
providing proof that a cartridge is original. Samsung’s logo changes colour
when tilted from clear to cyan, as does the embossed picture, and HP Inc has a
QR code on its “security seals” which can be scanned for proof of originality.
Xerox uses a serial number and a bar code for its security label with a
background that alters at different angles.
Buying online and shopping for
bargains has its risks, so customers are told, when on a website, to check if
the article is a much lower price, and if it appears too good to be true, “it probably is”. Side effects of using
non-genuine products are defined by the printing experience, with ink or toner
not be genuine either, which will lead to poor print quality and streaking as
well as poor colour.
These cartridges can have a
negative affect on the printer, and may lead to damage caused by ill-fitting
cartridges or leaking ink, which in the long term will be very expensive as the
printer will need to be replaced. The article concludes that ‘you pay for what
you get’ stands true when it comes
to quality and guarantees, and the right to a refund or replacement only comes
with the genuine article. http://www.therecycler.com/posts/how-to-spot-counterfeit-cartridges/

New ETIRA board members named
The Recycler’s Stefanie Unland, Armor Office
Printing’s Gerwald van der Gijp and Greenman AB’s Jorgen Wonisch were appointed to the board at Focus
on Europe.
Unland,
Managing Editor of The
Recycler, has become the first woman to be appointed to the board of
ETIRA, while van der Gijp, Armor Office Printing’s Vice President and General
Manager, and Wonisch, CEO of Swedish remanufacturer Greenman AB, have also
joined as board members. All three were named at ETIRA’s annual general meeting
at The Recycler’s Focus on Europe event, which took
place in Lisbon, Portugal on 16 and 17 June – you
can read our reports here and here.
David Connett,
founding member of ETIRA and Vice-President, stepped down due to becoming CEO of Triton Precision
Engineering, as did OCP’s Carsten Edelmeier and Armor’s Pierre-Antoine Pluvinage.
Other members of the board remaining include LVL’s Philippe Guenin, KMP’s
Jan-Michael Sieg, Consuprint’s Javier Martinez and Pelikan’s Joachim
Kretschmer.
Unland stated: “In my
10 years in the remanufacturing industry, I have seen a lot of change, and
continue to see change ahead. ETIRA has always been at the forefront in terms
of supporting the remanufacturing industry in these changing times, so I am
excited and honoured to be able to do anything I can to support ETIRA and
continue its good work.”
Vincent van Dijk,
Secretary General of ETIRA, commented that “it was a pity to see David Connett
leave the association: he was a very active board member and provided great
input. But we are also very excited about working with Stefanie and her team at The Recycler: only together
can we spread the message about the benefits of remanufacturing!”
Christian Wernhart,
President of ETIRA, added: “I am pleased to have served as President for 10
years now. But I am a person who rather looks to the future than to the past.
With the new board, I am confident we will have the right team in place to
address the challenges before us. Our industry is going through a process of
consolidation, and markets are still under pressure of lower print volumes and
low pricing. We need to fight for our position, and ETIRA helps us to do just
that.”
